
Chan Earns Bronze to Pace Fencing at NCAA Northeast Regional

ITHACA, N.Y. – Freshman Casey Chan captured bronze in women's sabre, and fellow freshmen Anisha Kasi and Ryan Scarpa both earned top-12 finishes to pace Brown University fencing at the 2020 NCAA Northeast Regional on Sunday at Cornell University's Barton Hall.

Chan (Cresskill, N.J.) led the Bears' group of three fencers to reach the final round of 12 with her third-place finish out of 45 competitors in women's sabre, completing the tournament with a 16-7 overall record and besting her No. 14 seed position.

Kasi (New City, N.Y.) came in 10th place out of 43 fencers in women's foil with an overall record of 12-11, topping her No. 13 seed, and Scarpa (Manhasset, N.Y.) placed 12th out of 42 fencers in men's foil, eclipsing his No. 19 seed.

For the NCAA Championships, the Northeast Region has nine allocations for women's sabre, eight allocations for women's foil, and eight allocations for men's foil alongside additional potential qualifiers.
"I'm very pleased with the performance of this growing team, and very pleased with three of our freshmen who made the final round in an amazingly challenging field," Brown head coach Alex Ripa said. "One other Brown fencer missed the final round by only one point! I'm excited to see who qualifies to Nationals and to see where this team can go!"

Two other Bears reached the semifinal round of 21 as junior Nathan Sinai (Merion Station, Pa.) placed 14th out of 52 fencers in men's epee with an overall record of 11-5, vaulting past his No. 36 seed position, and freshman Ronald Yuan (Birmingham, Ala.) came in 19th place out of 38 competitors in men's sabre, beating his No. 24 seed.

Sophomore Timmy Frank (Portland, Ore.) placed 22nd in men's epee, and freshman Nick Andrade (Quincy, Mass.) came in 22nd in men's foil. In men's sabre, junior Sean Feeney (Riverside, R.I.) and freshman Kyle Reyes (Chatham, N.J.) placed 27th and 31st respectively. Sophomore Benjamin Ryjikov (Scarsdale, N.Y.) came in 49th in men's epee.

In women's foil, junior Elena Jin (Fremont, Calif.) and sophomore Anna Susini (Lexington, Ky.) finished 24th and 29th respectively. In women's sabre, junior Signe Golash (Syracuse, N.Y.) and senior Sabrina Edelman (New York, N.Y.) notched 23rd and 31st-place finishes apiece.

In women's epee, junior Sofija Podvisocka (Dublin, Calif.), junior Arianna Ferretti (Old Field, N.Y.), senior Sophie Ulene (Scarsdale, N.Y.), and junior Ally Zhu (Shanghai, China) came in 29th, 31st, 36th, and 44th respectively.

Next, Brown will look to send representatives to the NCAA Championships from March 19-22 at the TCF Center in Detroit, Mich., with women's competition taking place from March 19-20 and men's competition taking place from March 21-22. The NCAA will announce selections on Tuesday, March 10.
