KENNESAW, Ga. – Garett Delano (Callahan, Fla.) and Ray Sass (Dunedin, Fa.) had two hits apiece, but the Brown baseball team was edged by Kennesaw State, 6-5, to close out the four-game series at Stillwell Baseball Stadium.
Â
Brown (3-9) took a two-run lead into the sixth inning and then rallied with two runs in the top of the ninth, but Kennesaw State (10-6) held on take the weekend series, 3-1.
Â
Joe Lomuscio (West Roxbury, Mass.) went 1-for-2 with a pair of walks, and also hit .308 in the series with four stolen bases, while Rich Ciufo (Medford, N.Y.) batted .357 over the weekend.
Â
Will Tomlinson (Irvine, Calif.) went five innings with three runs allowed and nine strikeouts as the starter. Ryan Kuntz (Minneapolis, Minn.) took the loss in relief, while Nathan Dupree earned the bullpen win for the Owls.
"With the exception of one inning, that was a very well played game and a great response to yesterday," said head coach Grant Achilles. "Tommy threw very well, and our bullpen just had a hiccup today. I'm very proud of this team, and it will be nice to get back home for the final weekend of preparation before Ivy play."
Â
Lomuscio gave the Bears an early lead with a single in the first inning before crossing the plate on a throwing error. Tomlinson held the Owls to one run and three hits over five innings, and the Bears padded their lead with two runs in the top half, as Calvin Farris (San Diego, Calif.) hit an RBI single and Delano scored on a fielder's choice.
Â
Kennesaw evened the score with a pair of runs on three hits in the sixth inning and then took the lead with three runs in the eighth.
Â
Brown battled back in the ninth as Ciufo hit a pinch-hit double and then scored on a wild pitch. Delano also singled and scored on a wild pitch to trim the deficit to one run, but Dupree came up with a final double play to end the frame.
Â
Brown will host Northeastern on Friday (3/13) in the home opener.
