BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Freshman Ricky Cabanillas placed seventh in the 149-pound weight class as Brown University wrestling completed competition at the 116th Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association Championships on Saturday at Lehigh University's Stabler Arena.
Â
"Having a freshman place in a tournament with this caliber of competition speaks well for the future," Brown head coach Todd Beckerman said. "We'll bring back eight of the guys that wrestled this weekend. Most of them competed at EIWAs for the first time, and five of those eight reached the placing round. Â
Making his debut at EIWAs, Cabanillas (Whippany, N.J.) finished the weekend with a 3-2 record, increasing his team-best win total to 25 victories on the year. On Saturday, he dropped an 11-5 decision to No. 7 seed PJ Ogunsanya of Army West Point in the consolation prior to taking a forfeit victory over No. 9 Lucas Revano of Penn in the seventh-place match.
Â
After dropping a 6-3 decision to Revano to open competition on Friday, Cabanillas notched back-to-back victories over Matt Swanson of Binghamton, 6-5, and No. 6 Matt Kolonia of Bucknell, 9-5, to advance to day two and earn his spot as a place-winner.
Â
Six other Bears also tallied wins on Friday before their runs at the conference tournament came to a close.
Â
In the team standings, Brown finished 14th out of 17 schools with 13.5 points. Lehigh won the team title with 154 points, Cornell came in second with 120 points, and Army placed third with 112 points.
