Zion Lewis, Ijeoma Uche and Gracie Whelan capture Ivy titles
ITHACA, N.Y. – Zion Lewis (Canton, Ga.), Ijeoma Uche (Lawrenceville, Ga.) and Gracie Whelan (Charlotte, N.C.) all captured individual titles as the Brown women's track & field team placed sixth on final day of the Ivy League Indoor Track & Field Championships at Cornell's Barton Hall.
Brown earned 57 points to finish behind Penn (133), Harvard (126), Cornell (82.5), Princeton (68) and Columbia (64.66), and ahead of Yale (50.33) and Dartmouth (38.5).
"We had a great weekend overall," said head coach Tim Springfield. "Zion and Gracie had enormous efforts and produced amazing performances. We also had young athletes getting on the podium for the first time which was huge for the team."
Lewis was named the Most Outstanding Field Performer of the meet after totaling 14 points in a pair of field events. She won the triple jump on Sunday at 44-1.25 to set the all-time Ivy League, school and facility record, which currently ranks eighth in the NCAA this season.
Lewis was also fourth in the long jump on Saturday at 19-6.75 for fourth all-time in program history. She moved up to fourth in her fifth attempt to give the Bears 14 total points in the event. Lewis added a fourth-place finish in the finals of the 60 meters on Sunday as she crossed in a time of 7.58.
Whelan claimed the Ivy League title in the 400 meters with a winning time of 54.84, as she passed top-seeded Uchechi Nwogwugwu of Penn just before the finish line. Senior May Stern (Providence, R.I.), the defending league champion in the event, took third at 56.05 to give Brown 16 combined points.
Uche defended her title in the long jump on Saturday as she won the Ivy indoor event for the second-straight season. Uche topped the field with a winning leap of 20-5.75 on her second attempt, just missing her own school record, for fifth-best all-time in meet history.
The 4x800 relay team of Samantha Valentine (Middleton, Wis.), Shari Rauls (Larchmont, N.Y.), Margaux Terrasson (New York, N.Y.) and Amy Willig (Phoenixville, Pa.) finished runner-up in a time of 8:59.31.
The 4x400 meter relay team, which set the school record earlier this season, did not finish after the leadoff runner was tripped up and the referee ruled that is was incidental contact.
"It was an unfortunate way to end the meet, especially when the final team places were still undecided, "Springfield said. "I know our relay was ready to go and it was tough to not get the chance."
Rookie Lily Dumas (Holden, Mass.) placed fifth overall in the pentathlon with 3,377 total points. She moved up from sixth to fifth in the final event with a five-second personal-best time of 2:31.99 in the 800 meters.
Jae Crawford (Orlando, Fla.) was seventh in the weight throw with a two-foot personal-record of 53-2.25.
Rookie Ify Ofulue (Cypress, Texas) took fifth in the shot put at 45-10.25 for eighth all-time at Brown and Felicia Renelus (Valley Stream, N.Y.) was sixth in the triple jump with a leap of 40-11 for sixth in the record book.
