WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Senior Rich Ciufo (Medford, N.Y.) hit a walk-off double in the 10th inning to lift the Brown baseball team over La Salle, 4-3, in Sunday's non-conference contest at Wake Forest's Couch Field.
Brown (2-6) capped the four-game, round-robin weekend series with a win and outhit the Explorers by a 9-5 margin. La Salle dropped to 4-5 on the season.
Ciufo went 2-for-5 on Sunday and hit .353 in the four-game weekend against Sacred Heart, No. 24 Wake Forest and La Salle. Calvin Farris (San Diego, Calif.) also had two hits in the game with a pair of RBIs.
Will Tomlinson (Irvine, Calif.) allowed just one run and two hits with seven strikeouts over seven innings in a no decision. Dustin Baird (Indianapolis, Ind.) earned the win in relief behind two scoreless innings of one-hit ball. Jordan Morales was handed the loss for the Explorers.
"Will was outstanding today, and today was a gritty win that showed a lot of character," said head coach Grant Achilles. "To bend and not break, and pick each other up, this game said a lot about our team."
La Salle scored one run in the first inning and starter Manny Corporan limited the Bears to just two hits over the first four frames. Brown broke through with three runs in the fifth, however, as Ray Sass (Dunedin, Fla.) drove home Ryan Marra (Commerce, Mich.) with a single through the right side. Farris followed with a two-run homer for the two-run advantage.
Brown kept La Salle at bay until the ninth inning, when the Explorers used two walks and a trio of singles to tie the game at 3-3, forcing extra innings.
Garett Delano (Callahan, Fla.) drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the 10th and then advanced to second on a groundout, setting the stage for Ciufo's walk-off double to right field.
Brown will visit Kennesaw State for a four-game series next weekend.
