Dale Scores Career-High 26, Women’s Basketball Defeats Dartmouth, 83-71

HANOVER, N.H. – Junior guard McKenna Dale scored 26 points with 11 rebounds, senior guard Justine Gaziano netted 19 points, and sophomore forward Ashley Ducharme posted a double-double on 13 points and 12 rebounds as Brown University women's basketball defeated Dartmouth College, 83-71, on Friday night at Leede Arena.
The Bears (7-11, 1-4 Ivy) held a lead as large as 20 points in the second quarter, maintained a 14-point lead heading to the fourth quarter, and held off a late charge from the host Big Green (7-11, 1-4 Ivy), hitting 9-of-10 free throws in the final 2:12.
"We played really well as a team tonight," Brown head coach Sarah Behn said. "We had a lot of people step up and make shots, won the rebounding battle by 14, and made our free throws down the stretch. I'm really proud of our team for maintaining the lead in the fourth quarter even when Dartmouth made a run."
Dale (Storrs, Conn.) scored her game and career-high 26 points on 7-of-12 field goals, 4-of-8 3-pointers, and 8-of-8 free throws, completing her second career double-double with 11 rebounds. She scored over 20 points for the first time in her career, finished in double figures for the eighth time in the last nine games, and added three assists.
Gaziano (Natick, Mass.) netted her 19 points on 7-of-15 field goals and 4-of-8 treys, while tallying a career-high five assists and three rebounds. She now has 1,669 career points, moving into 19th place in Ivy League history in career scoring. She scored in double figures for the 14th time this season and 82nd time in her career.
Ducharme (Milton, Mass.) posted her first collegiate double-double behind her 13 points and 12 rebounds, making 5-of-11 field goals and adding two assists. She scored in double figures for the fourth time this season and grabbed double-figure boards for the fourth time on the year.
Sophomore guard Maddie Mullin (Wellesley, Mass.) contributed nine points, four assists, and three rebounds, and junior guard Dominique Leonidas (Stone Mountain, Ga.) finished with eight points and four rebounds, connecting on 2-of-3 field goals and 4-of-4 free throws.
Senior center Haley Green (Salem, Va.) chipped in four points, four rebounds, and two blocks, and freshman guard Lexi Love (Oakland, Calif.) tacked on three assists, three rebounds, and two points.
For Dartmouth, Annie McKenna totaled 18 points, nine assists, and seven rebounds, Allie Harland netted 12 points, and Elle Louie snagged 10 rebounds.
For the game, the Bears shot 27-of-57 (47.4 percent) from the floor, 11-of-30 (36.7 percent) from 3-point distance, and 18-of-21 (85.7 percent) from the free throw line, while limiting the Big Green to 34.2-percent shooting (25-of-73). Brown hit 10-of-11 free throws in the fourth quarter, including 9-of-10 in the final 2:12. Brown held a 47-33 edge in rebounding.
Facing a 6-2 deficit to open the game, the Bears scored 13 unanswered points to pull ahead 15-6 with 1:32 left in the first quarter. Gaziano netted eight points during the run, including a pair of 3-pointers alongside a trey from Dale and layup from Love. A jumper from Ducharme and two free throws from Leonidas gave Brown a 19-9 lead at the end of the opening stanza, capping a 17-3 run.
After Dartmouth pulled within 19-12, the Bears responded with a 15-2 run, taking a 34-14 edge – its largest of the half – with 4:10 to go in the second quarter. During the burst, Dale scored four points, Gaziano and Mullin each hit a 3-pointer, and Ducharme and Green each scored baskets. Following a 10-0 run for Dartmouth that made the score 34-24, buckets from Leonidas and freshman guard Sydney Rosant (Foster City, Ga.) staked Brown to a 38-26 advantage at halftime.
In the first half, the Bears hit 14-of-28 field goals, including 9-of-13 shots inside the arc and 5-of-15 shots behind the arc. As part of that effort, the Bears hit 8-of-12 field goals in the second quarter, including 6-of-6 shots from inside the arc. Brown held Dartmouth to 27.3-percent shooting (9-of-33) in the half, including limiting the Big Green to 16.7-percent shooting (3-of-18) inside the arc.
After Dartmouth came within 38-30, the Bears countered with a 15-4 run, moving ahead 53-34 with 5:05 to play in the third quarter. Mullin, Dale, and Ducharme all hit 3-pointers during the run while Gaziano scored four points. Buckets from Gaziano and Green helped keep Brown up 58-44 heading to the fourth quarter.
Five points from Dale kept Brown up 63-50 before Dartmouth cut the margin to 63-56 with 6:03 remaining. The Bears responded with a 3-point play from Ducharme and 3-pointers from Gaziano and Dale to keep a 72-61 edge with 3:30 remaining. A layup from Leonidas gave Brown a 74-64 lead with 2:59 to go before the Bears hit 9-of-10 free throws in the final 2:12 to seal the win.
