Ithaca, N .Y. – The back end of an Ivy League road weekend is always a difficult task for the visiting team. Brown got off to a sluggish start and never got on track after traveling from New York City to Ithaca, NY the night before and fell to Cornell, 63-45, Saturday evening at Newman Arena.
Brown, who had won six of its previous seven games, falls to 13-10 overall and 6-4 in the Ivy League. Cornell improves to 6-17 overall, 3-7 in conference play.
The Bears struggled from the field all evening, connecting on 15-of-58 field goals (26-percent), including 4-of-23 (17-percent) shots from beyond the 3-point arc. Cornell shot a sizzling 59-percent in the opening half and connected on 21-of-41 field goals for the game (51-percent).
"I thought Cornell was terrific and deserves all the credit," said Brown head coach Mike Martin. "We had a hard time scoring the ball and they were responsible for a lot of that. When we did get open looks, we weren't able to knock them down."
Junior Tamenang Choh (Lowell, MA) turned in a yeoman's effort for Brown, scoring 12 points, and posting game highs in rebounds (9) and assists (4).
Bears' sophomore Jaylan Gainey (Greensboro, NC) also scored in double figures with 11 points and five rebounds, while senior Zach Hunsaker (North Salt Lake City, UT) added nine points
The Big Red had big performances from Terrance McBride and Bryan Knapp, who scored 17 points each to lead all scorers. Kobe Dickson scored 10 points and added eight rebounds for Cornell.
The Bears trailed, 34-25, at the half and Cornell picked up where they left off with a 7-0 run to open the half and build a 41-25 lead.
Cornell kept up the pressure at both ends of the court and built a 17 point lead, 52-35, on a layup by Greg Dolan to beat the shot clock with 9:41 left in the game.
Brown fell behind by as many as 14 points in the opening half, 28-14, after an 18-4 Cornell run that finished at the 4:38 mark.
Brown got back in the game and trailed, 31-25, following a trey by sophomore Brandon Anderson (Mahwah, NJ) with 1:36 left. Cornell's Dickson connected on a trey with 1:13 remaining in the half to pull the Big Red ahead, 34-25, at intermission.
Brown returns to the Pizzitola Sports Center for its final home weekend of the season, hosting Princeton on Friday, February 28 at 7:00 pm, and Penn on Saturday, February 29 at 6:00 pm. Watch both games on ESPN+, with the Penn game also slated for NESNplus.
