Brown Moves Into Second Place In Ivy Standings With 72-66 Win Over Columbia

New York, N.Y. – Senior Brandon Anderson (Mahwah, NJ) scored 20 points and senior Zach Hunsaker (North Salt Lake City, UT) added 17 points to lead Brown to a 72-66 come-from-behind Ivy League victory over Columbia Friday evening at Levien Gym.
The win vaults Brown (13-9) into second place in the Ivy standings, tied at 6-3 with Harvard and Princeton, one game behind Yale. Columbia falls to 6-19 overall, 1-8 in conference play.
"I thought the second half really represented what we're been when we're at our best this year – defense, rebounding and attacking the paint offensively," said Brown head coach Mike Martin. "I'm really pleased with the win."
Columbia held a 35-30 lead at the half and led by as many as 11 points in the second half, taking a 43-32 advantage to open the second half on a short jumper by Smith.
Brown answered immediately with a 19-4 run to pull ahead, 51-47, on two free throws by David Mitchell with 9:09 remaining. The Bears jumped out to a five point lead, 57-50, on an Anderson jumper with 6:51 left on the clock.
After Columbia regained the lead, 62-61, Gainey grabbed his 10threbound and put back a layup for a 63-62 Brown lead with 3:29 remaining.
Freshman Perry Cowan gave the Bears a 68-64 lead with a 3-point basket. The Lions drew to within two points, 68-66, on two free throws by Tai Bibb with 1:11 remaining.
Hunsaker immediately answered with a fade away jump shot and two free throws for a six point lead 72-66 Brown lead with 30 seconds remaining, putting the game out of reach.
With 20 points Anderson moved into the Top 10 in all-time Brown scoring with 1,334 career points, eighth best in Bears' basketball history.
Hunsaker scored 12 of his 17 points in the second half and connected on four consecutive points in the final 46 seconds that secured the Bears' win.
Brown junior Tamenang Choh (Lowell, MA) scored 15 points and added seven rebounds, while Gainey registered his first career double-double with 10 points and matching his career high 12 rebounds.
The game may have been decided on the backboards where Brown out-rebounded the Lions 40-28, including a 23-9 second half advantage.
The Lions were paced by the Mike Smith, the Ivy league's leading scorer, who tossed in 22 points. Jake Killingsworth (16) and Babbs (11) also scored in double figures for the Lions.
Brown held an early seven point lead, 18-11, but the Lions roared back with a 17-3 run to pull ahead by seven points, 28-21, following a trey by Killingsworth.
In a game of spurts, Brown's 9-2 run tied the game, 30-30, following an Anderson free throw with 3:32 remaining in the half.
The Lions held Brown scoreless for the remainder of the half with a. 5-0 run to lead, 35-30 at intermission.
Brown continues its New York swing, traveling to Ithaca, NY to take on Cornell tomorrow evening. Tip-off at Newman Arena is 6:00 pm.
