Men’s Tennis Falls to Cornell, 4-0, on First Day of ECAC Championship

ITHACA, N.Y. - The Brown men's tennis team suffered its first loss of the season with a 4-0 defeat to Cornell on Friday on the first day of the ECAC Championship at the Reis Tennis Center.

"Today's match with a very tough Cornell squad was significantly tighter than the final score would lead you to believe," said head coach Tim Gray. "We had quite a few opportunities that we just couldn't capitalize on today. Our senior captains, Peter Litsky and Jacob Walker did an excellent of setting the tone at #3 and #1 singles respectively. We will learn from this and bounce back and be ready to go tomorrow."

The third-seeded Big Red took a 1-0 lead by edging the sixth seeded Bears 6-4 in second doubles and 6-3 in the third spot. Cornell opened the singles round with a 6-4 6-1 win in fifth singles and closed out the match with victories in second (6-4, 6-3) and first (7-5, 6-4) singles. Senior Peter Litsky (St. Petersburg, Fla.) (7-5, 3-3 DNF, third) and junior Teddy van Eck (Rye, N.Y.) (7-5, 4-4 DNF, fourth) both held leads in their respective matches before the Big Red clinched the contest.

The Bears continue play at the ECAC Championship tomorrow (Saturday, Feb. 15) and will compete against Yale at 12:00 p.m.
