
Women’s Water Polo Defeats LIU, 10-6, Claremont-M-S, 9-4, at Bruno Classic

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University women's water polo improved to 4-0 on the weekend and 6-0 overall, defeating Long Island University, 10-6, and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 9-4, at the Bruno Classic on Saturday at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center.
The Bears (6-0) opened the day with a victory over the Sharks (0-1) – playing in their first game as a varsity program – before closing the night with a win over the Athenas (1-2) – the No. 3 ranked team in the CWPA Division III Poll.
"It's great to have started the season with six straight wins, but we know that this is just the beginning," Brown head coach Felix Mercado said. "We have two tough games to close the weekend tomorrow and will look to continue to improve each time out."
Both of Brown's goalkeepers posted double-figure save performances on the day with senior goalie Lauren Burns (Long Grove Ill.) making 10 saves against LIU and sophomore net-minder Marley Presiado (Newport Beach, Calif.) stopping 12 shots against CMS. Freshman Claire Pisani (Redwood City, Calif.) scored five goals against the Athenas.
Next, Brown concludes play at the Bruno Classic tomorrow – Sunday, February 2 – against Whittier (8:00 a.m.), and No. 18 Wagner (12:40 p.m.).
Game 1 – Brown 10, Long Island University 6
Freshman Katie Dvonch posted two goals and two assists as Brown bested Long Island University, 10-6, on Saturday morning in its first game of the day and third contest at the Bruno Classic.
The Bears gained an 8-3 lead at the end of three quarters and held an edge as large as 9-3 in their victory over the Sharks, playing in their first game as a varsity program.
Dvonch (Seal Beach, Calif.) totaled two goals, two assists, and two steals while junior Carissa Perez (Pico Rivera, Calif.) notched one goal, three assists, and six steals.
Freshman Bryn Gioffredi (Laguna Beach, Calif.) charted a goal and two assists, senior Lexi Atwell (La Jolla, Calif.) and freshman Claire Pisani (Redwood City, Calif.) each compiled a goal and an assist, and sophomore Dagmara Czajka (San Diego, Calif.) registered a goal and four steals.
Junior Kaitlyn Cook (Los Gatos, Calif.), and freshmen Linnea Kelly (Newport Beach, Calif.), Zoe King (Almaden, Calif.), and Claire Pisani (Redwood City, Calif.) each netted one goal.
In the cage, senior goalkeeper Lauren Burns (Long Grove, Ill.) made 10 saves – her second double-figure save performance of the year – and sophomore goalie Marley Presiado (Newport Beach, Calif.) added two saves.
Czajka scored the only goal of the first quarter to give the Bears a 1-0 lead at the end of one. After a LIU goal, Gioffredi and Perez each netted a goal to give Brown a 3-1 advantage at halftime.
Dvonch posted the first two goals of the second half, putting Brown up 5-1 with 5:38 to go in the third quarter. Goals from Atwell, King, and Pisani staked the hosts to an 8-3 lead heading to the fourth quarter.
Kelly notched the first tally of the final frame, making the score 9-3. After the Sharks used a 3-0 run to pull within 9-6, Cook closed the game's scoring with a goal with 25 seconds to play.

Pisani (Redwood City, Calif.) paced the Bears with her five goals while sophomore Katie Klein (Lafayette, Calif.) notched a goal, an assist, and a steal. Senior Lexi Atwell (La Jolla, Calif.) tallied a goal and a steal.
