WALTHAM, Mass. – Brown University women's fencing tallied a 4-1 record and the men's side added a 2-3 mark as the teams combined for a 6-4 record at the Eric Sollee Invitational on Saturday at Brandeis University's Gosman Sports Center.
"In one of the tougher tournaments of our season, Brown fencing put in a very strong performance, with the women's team, in particular, showing some excellent results," Brown head coach Alex Ripa said. "On the men's side, we had some close bouts and a very close decision with NJIT's very strong team. As a lead-up to the Ivy League Round-Robins next weekend, I am quite pleased with our performance!"
The Brown women earned victories over Haverford (22-5), Stevens (19-8), Hunter (27-0), and NJIT (17-10), while falling to NYU (17-10). The men topped Haverford (16-11) and Hunter (22-5), while dropping decisions to Stevens (17-10), NYU (18-9), and NJIT (15-12).
All three women's squads went 4-1 with women's foil and women's sabre both registering 33-12 composite marks and women's epee adding a 29-16 mark. Men's foil went 4-1 (28-17 composite), men's sabre finished 2-3 (25-20), and men's epee closed at 1-4 (16-29).
Freshman Casey Chan (Cresskill, N.J.) led women's sabre with a 14-1 record with junior Signe Golash (Syracuse, N.Y.) supporting her with an 11-4 mark in the same weapon. Freshman Anisha Kasi (New City, N.Y.) paced women's foil with a 12-1 record, and junior Elena Jin (Fremont, Calif.) followed with a 10-3 mark. Junior Sofia Podvisocka (Dublin, Calif.) led women's sabre with an 11-3 record.
