Cabanillas Wins Weight Class, Wrestling Tallies Six Placers at F&M Open

LANCASTER, Pa. – Freshman Ricky Cabanillas won the 149-pound weight class to lead a group of six place-winners for Brown University wrestling at the David H. Lehman Franklin & Marshall Open on Saturday at the Alumni Sports and Fitness Center.

The Bears totaled 37 wins on the day with 18 bonus-point victories, including nine major decisions, seven pins, and two technical falls. Eight Bears reached the quarterfinals of their weight classes, including three Bears who advanced to the semifinals.

"Today was a good way to start the new year, and it was great to have six guys place," Brown head coach Todd Beckerman said. "We can definitely carry the momentum from today into our dual season starting next weekend."

Alongside Cabanillas (Whippany, N.J.), sophomore Reese Fry (Manchester, Mich.) and freshman Darby Diedrich (Howell, N.J.) each placed fourth at 125 and 133 pounds respectively. Sophomores Jack Bokina (Mattituck, N.Y.) and Brandon Kui (Wayne, N.J.) came in fifth place at 157 and 184 pounds respectively, and junior Charlie Faber (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) finished sixth at 133 pounds.

Cabanillas rattled off five straight victories to win at 149, topping opponents from Sacred Heart, Penn, Princeton, American, and Rutgers along the way. He notched a fall and a major decision en route to the title.

Fry posted a pair of wins to place fourth at 125, using pins to defeat opponents from Franklin & Marshall and Navy. Diedrich also registered two wins for fourth at 133, beating adversaries from Rutgers and Appalachian State.

Bokina tallied four victories on his way to fifth at 157, gaining wins over wrestlers from Hofstra, Navy, Bucknell, and Clarion. He notched four bonus-point wins with a fall, technical fall, and two major decisions. Kui – making his debut with the Bears – matched Bokina with four wins to take fifth at 184, including pins against Bucknell and Lock Haven, while adding victories over F&M and Virginia. Faber used four wins to place sixth at 133, edging opponents from Campbell, Lock Haven, and Appalachian State.

Sophomore Bryce Rogers (Orlando, Fla.) and freshman Aaron Wolk (Chappaqua, N.Y.) both gained three wins at 174 pounds. Junior Theo Powers (Mexico, N.Y.), senior Matt Lattanze (Norristown, Pa.), and junior Nino Bastianelli (Marysville, Mich.) tacked on two wins apiece at 141, 157, and 197 pounds respectively. Sophomore Samuel Lynch (Foster, R.I.), freshman Kiran Srikanth (Pullman, Wash.), and sophomore David Heath (North Canton, Ohio) chipped in one win each at 141, 165, and 184 pounds respectively.

As part of the Bears seven falls, Fry and Kui each posted two pins while Powers, Cabanillas, and Bokina recorded one pin apiece.

Next, Brown opens the dual meet portion of its season at American on Friday, Jan. 10 at 7:00 p.m. and at George Mason on Saturday, Jan. 11 at 5:00 p.m. (ESPN+).
