BOSTON – Brown men's and women's track & field put together several impressive performances as select members of the team wrapped up the first day of competition at the New England Championships Friday at the Reggie Lewis Center.
Â
Ijeoma Uche (Lawrenceville, Ga.) topped the field of 22 competitors in the long jump with a winning distance of 19-11.
Â
Rookie Lily Dumas (Holden, Mass.) was runner-up in the pentathlon with 3,534 total points, good for sixth all-time at school history, as she posted personal-best results in four of five events.
Â
"We decided to stay home and train with a big segment of the team, but the athletes we did compete made the most of it," said head coach Tim Springfield. "Ijeoma is really consistent over 6 meters, and I know she's poised for a breakthrough. Lily had a huge day--getting over 3500 points in her first year is tremendous."
Â
May Stern (Providence, R.I.) recorded the fastest time of the day in the 400-meter preliminaries (55.91) to qualify for the finals. Shari Rauls (Larchmont, N.Y.) took sixth in the prelims of the 800 meters at 2:14.10 to move on to the finals, while Calvin Perkins (Belmont, Mass.) qualified for the 500-meter finals with a second-place time of 1:04.77 in the prelims.
Â
Brown will continue the New England Championships Saturday.
