PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sophomore Reese Fry and freshman Aaron Wolk won the 125 and 174-pound weight classes respectively to lead Brown University wrestling at the Johnson & Wales Wildcat Open on Sunday at the Wildcat Center.
Â
All four Bears that competed at the event advanced to first-place matches as the quartet combined for a 14-2 record. Those 14 wins included 10 bonus-point victories – three major decisions, a technical fall, and six falls. The 125-pound weight class featured a pair of Bears in the first-place match.
Â
"This was a good event for us to get some guys an opportunity to compete, and it's nice to come home with a couple of titles," Brown head coach Todd Beckerman said. "We're looking forward to having an opportunity to wrestle in front of our home fans on Saturday with two Ivy duals."
Â
Fry (Manchester, Mich.) took home a Wildcat Open title for the second straight year with a 4-0 record, defeating opponents from SUNY Ulster, American International College, Johnson & Wales, and Brown. He posted two falls – his team-high fourth and fifth pins of the year – in addition to a major decision – his first of the year.
Â
Wolk (Chappaqua, N.Y.) posted a 3-0 mark for first place at 174 pounds, topping opponents from Roger Williams, Bridgewater State, and Johnson & Wales with three straight falls – the first three pins of his career.
Â
Freshman Nicky Cabanillas (Whippany, N.J.) – making his collegiate debut – registered a 3-1 record and placed second at 125 pounds. He bested opponents from Roger Williams, SUNY Ulster, and Bridgewater State before dropping a major decision to Fry in the first-place match. Cabanillas posted a fall and two major decisions on the day.
