HANOVER, N.H. – Junior Hannah Butler (Jamesville, N.Y.) captured first place overall as the Brown men's and women's cross country teams both finished second in their respective races at the season-opening Maribel Sanchez Souther Invitational Saturday at the Hanover Country Club.
Â
The women's team took second with 33 points, highlighted by three top-five individual finishes, as the Bears placed just behind host Dartmouth and ahead of Hartford and Maine.
Â
"Hannah ran a great race to get her first collegiate victory," said head coach Tim Springfield. "She took control halfway through the race and really dominated the field. I think both Dartmouth and Brown had some key performers not on the starting line, but it was still a very competitive team race. We were in it the entire way and came up just a little bit short."
Â
Butler completed the six-kilometer course with a winning time of 21:58.74, while fellow juniors Samantha Valentine (Middleton, Wis.) and Ally Hajda (Atlantic Beach, Fla.) finished third (22:27.88) and fourth (22:40.49), respectively. Rookie Sarah Reichheld (Concord, Mass.) was 14th at 23:21.79 before Isabela Bartczak (Orlando, Fla.) secured 19th to round out the scorers.
Â
The men's team claimed second place with 46 total points, finishing behind Dartmouth but ahead of both Maine and Hartford.
Â
"We had a few of our top runners on the sidelines this weekend, but I felt the team as a whole raced well," said Springfield. "It was great to see JJ Yabu take a big step forward running up front for us. I also thought that the freshmen by and large had strong races in their first 8K races."
Â
Junior Dominic Morganti (Syracuse, N.Y.) led the way with a fourth-place finish in a time of 25:00.55, followed by Jared Yabu (Moraga, Calif.) two spots later for sixth at 25:06.89. Hughes Benjamin (New Orleans, La.) added a 15th-place showing at 25:46.58, before Griffin McCauley (Stone Mountain, Ga.) and Ford Shaper (Castle Rock, Colo.) finished 18th and 19th, respectively.
Â
The Bears will return to the course on Friday, Sept. 20 for the Battle in Beantown event at Franklin Park.
