
No. 20 Men’s Water Polo Tallies 4-0 Record on Day One of Bruno Classic

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – No. 20 Brown University men's water polo went 4-0 on day one of the eighth annual Bruno Classic, defeating Wagner College, 13-10 (OT), McKendree University, 18-16, California Lutheran University, 14-7, and Connecticut College, 10-5, on Saturday at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center.
On opening day of the 2019 season, the Bears (4-0) beat the Seahawks (0-1) in overtime in their opener and held off a late rally from the Bearcats (0-1) in game two prior to earning victories over the Kingsmen (1-1) and Camels (0-2) in the evening session.
"Our objective was to give everyone an opportunity to play," Brown head coach Felix Mercado said. "We setup the opponents to be able to do that – against McKendree 20 people played and a number of players got extended playing time against Conn. College. Today was about getting better. It's great to start the year 4-0, but we're far from where we are going to be, and we know that. Tomorrow will be a different challenge against Bucknell and California Baptist."
Senior James Thygesen (Menlo Park, Calif.) led Brown with 10 goals on the day, including four tallies against both Wagner and Cal Lutheran. Sophomore Matt Simko (Coral Gables, Fla.) and freshman Leo Berkman (Orinda, Calif.) netted eight and seven goals respectively between the four games. Five different Brown student-athletes posted hat tricks on the day.
Junior goalkeeper Riad Hallal (Coronado, Calif.) and sophomore net-minder Ugo Piovan (Vouliagmeni, Greece) made 17 and 14 saves apiece on the day.
Next, Brown concludes play at the Bruno Classic tomorrow – Sunday, Sept. 8 – with matchups against No. 16 Bucknell (9:45 a.m., ESPN+) and No. 16 California Baptist (2:00 p.m., ESPN+).
Game 1 – No. 20 Brown 13, Wagner 10 (OT)
Senior Hudson Rawlings scored with three seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime, and senior James Thygesen and sophomore Matt Simko combined for seven goals as No. 20 Brown defeated Wagner, 13-10, in overtime in the two teams' season opener on Saturday morning at the Bruno Classic.
After the Seahawks took a 9-8 lead with 11 seconds left in regulation, the Bears countered with a goal eight seconds later and then outscored the visitors, 4-1, in overtime, including a 3-0 margin in the second bonus session.
Thygesen (Menlo Park, Calif.) paced the Brown offense with four goals and two assists while Simko (Coral Gables, Fla.) tallied three goals and two ejections drawn.
Senior Armen Deirmenjian (Beverly Hills, Calif.) notched two goals and two assists, and freshman Leo Berkman (Orinda, Calif.) registered two goals and an assist. Rawlings (Murrieta, Calif.) added a team-high six ejections drawn to a goal and an assist, and freshman Cole Atwell (San Diego, Calif.) netted a goal in overtime.
In the cage, sophomore goalkeeper Ugo Piovan (Vouliagmeni, Greece) made nine saves and tacked on a steal.
Brown opened the game with a 2-1 lead at the end of the first quarter behind goals from Thygesen and Berkman and maintained a 3-1 edge early in the second stanza behind a marker from Deirmenjian.
Simko netted Brown's other two goals in the second quarter, countering four goals from Wagner as the two teams stood tied at 5-5 at the break.
After the Seahawks scored the first two goals of the third quarter, Brown responded with goals from Deirmenjian and Thygesen to send the contest tied 7-7 heading to the fourth quarter.
Following a Wagner tally, Berkman drew Brown level at 8-8 with 3:36 left in regulation. The Seahawks pulled ahead 9-8 with 11 seconds on the clock before Rawlings forced overtime with his game-tying goal with three seconds to spare.
Atwell charted the first goal of overtime, giving the Bears a 10-9 advantage, before Wagner equalized at 10-10 at the end of the first bonus session. In the second overtime period, a goal from Simko prior to back-to-back tallies from Thygesen – including a conversion on a 5-meter penalty shot – gave the Bears the victory.

Goals from Atwell and Thygesen answered Bearcat tallies to keep the Bears up 15-13 with 4:35 to play. Consecutive goals from McKendree then knotted the score at 15-15 with 3:29 remaining. Rawlings made it 16-15 just 16 seconds later before the visitors equalized again at 16-16 with 2:55 on the clock. Berry and Fuller each found the back of the net in the final 2:32 to seal the win.

The Bears' single goal scorers included senior Will Collier (Darien, Conn.), sophomore Andrew Penner (Atherton, Calif.), and freshmen Cole Atwell (San Diego, Calif.) and Daniel McDermott (Greenwich, Conn.). McDermott added two field blocks while sophomore Stephen Salle (Chadds Ford, Pa.) dished out three assists.
