FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Brown women's rugby team defeated Sacred Heart, 29-17, at Park Ave Field on Saturday. The Bears shutout the Pioneers in the first half, 12-0, and then held off their attack in the second for the victory.
Freshman Mahdia Parker (Harlem, N.Y.) led Brown (3-2, 3-1 Tier II) in scoring with two tries while three other Bears scored.
"The Pioneers were well prepared and we didn't score until well into the half," said head coach Kathy Flores. "Mahdia opened up our scoring in the first and second half and paved the way for her teammates to keep attacking."
Parker recorded her first try to open the contest and give the Bears a 7-0 lead with the addition of a successful conversion by senior Abby O'Keefe (St. Louis, Mo.). Sophomore Johanna Bandler (Norwich, Vt) next increased Brown's lead to 12-0 with her first-career try to close out scoring for the opening half.
Another try by Parker and a score by junior Karina Wang (Ottawa, Ontario) built the Bears' lead to 22-0 in the second half.
Sacred Heart (1-4, 1-4 Tier II) would start to mount a comeback, scoring two consecutive tries and capitalizing on Brown penalties to pull within 10 (22-12).
Sophomore Zy Thomas (Fairfield, Calif.) halted the Pioneers' momentum with a try and freshman Erin Jessop (Ashland, Mass.) followed with a successful kick before Sacred Heart ended the match with a try for the final of 29-17.
Defensively, senior Alexandria Simon (Kaunakakai, Hawaii), O'Keefe and Wang paced the Bears.
Brown next has a week off before hosting Mount St. Mary's on Saturday, Oct. 12 at Marvel Field starting at 11:00 a.m.
