
Women’s Rugby Overpowers Mount St. Mary’s, 49-7

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's rugby team defeated Mount St. Mary's, 49-7, on Saturday at Marvel Field. The win gives the Bears their third-straight victory and improves their Tier II record to 4-1. The loss moves the Mountaineers to 4-3 overall, 2-3 in Tier II action.
"I'm very proud of our performance and I have to say the players were the ones who came to the game with their minds made up to go hard or go home," said head coach Kathy Flores.
Brown (4-2, 4-1 Tier II) jumped out to a 22-0 lead by halftime. Freshman Mahdia Parker (Harlem, N.Y.) led the Bears in the stanza with two scores while junior Lexi Nelson (Foxboro, Mass.) also touched down a try. Junior Olivia Duba (San Ramon, Calif.) scored a penalty kick and had both of the Bears' conversion kicks in the half.
Senior Abby O'Keefe (St. Louis, Mo.) recorded the first try of the second half for a 29-0 lead. Sophomore Zy Thomas' (Fairfield, Calif.) try then made it 39-7.
Junior Janelys Torres (Lawrence, Mass.) and senior Alexandria Simon (Kaunakakai, Hawaii) were strong on the rucks on the day while Thomas and Nelson recorded solid tackles. Duba was an offensive force, making a number of forward progress plays.
Senior Lilly Snell (Tokyo, Japan) recorded the final try of the match for the Bears to bring the game to its final of 49-7.
With her tries today, Parker now has scores in her last three matches.
Brown will next host Harvard at Marvel Field in its final home match of the regular season on Saturday, Oct. 19 at 11:00 a.m.
