PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Brown field hockey team shutout Hofstra, 3-0, on Sunday at Goldberger Family Field. The Bears scored once in the second quarter and twice in the fourth while their defense shut down the Pride attack.
Freshmen Calista Manuzza (North Caldwell, N.J.) and Jodie Brine (Oxshott, U.K.) combined for the clean sheet while Brown (2-5) received goals from seniors Corinne Condie (St. Louis, Mo.) and Hannah Leckey (Madison, Conn.) and junior Anagha Nayak (Ann Arbor, Mich.).
"I was really happy with today's effort," said head coach Jill Reeve. "I think today we played at a faster pace and at a higher level and demanded more from one another. I think that's going to be a key element for us playing the type of game we want to play moving forward."
The Bears came out of the gates quickly with sophomore Danielle van Rootselaar (Bilthoven, Netherlands) generating a shot on goal just 10 seconds in, but the first quarter would end scoreless despite a 4-1 shot advantage favoring Brown.Â
Condie got the Bears on the board when she got by her defender and fired in a shot at 23:08 of the second for her first of the season.Â
Brown's defense continued its stellar play and shutdown Hofstra (3-5) in the third, not allowing a shot as the score remained 1-0.
Leckey helped put the game out of reach with a tally at 48:13, her second of the year, while it was sister-to-sister for the game's third goal as junior Anya Nayak (Ann Arbor, Mich.) assisted Anagha Nayak's goal at 51:14.Â
The Bears finished with a 13-7 shot advantage while penalty corners were even at 3-3 for both teams.Â
Manuzza notched two saves in the first half while Brine completed the shutout with three stops in the second half.Â
Merlijn van der Vegt made five saves for the Pride while Djuna Slort paced their offense with two shots on goal.Â
Brown next opens Ivy League play and will travel to Columbia on Friday, Sept. 27 for a 5:00 p.m. matchup.Â
