PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Brown field hockey team was defeated by No. 20 Albany, 6-0, on Saturday at Goldberger Family Field. The Great Danes benefited from a three-goal first quarter and were able to limit the Bear attackers.Â
"I think our team is at a tipping point," said head coach Jill Reeve. "It's all well and good that we have talent and game IQ but we've got to be decided about who we are and what we want to accomplish as a team."
Albany (4-3) built a 2-0 advantage six minutes into the first quarter with goals from Dana Bozek (5:16) and Elaina Burchell (5:51). Baylee Burghardt made it 3-0 at 9:06. The Great Danes finished the first with a 6-3 lead in shots and a 2-1 edge in penalty corners.
Katie MacCallum generated Albany's fourth goal at 16:23 of the second period as the Great Danes took a 4-0 lead into the break. Albany logged five shots in the second while Brown (1-5) recorded three.
The Bears had an uptick in shots in the third but Albany's Melissa Nealon came up with three saves in the stanza. MacCallum added her second of the day at 39:28 to bring the score to 5-0.Â
Cosima Rocktaeschel closed out the game's scoring at 54:19 while the Great Danes had a 2-0 edge in both shots and penalty corners for the fourth.
Overall, shots were 18-10 in favor of Albany while the visitor's also led in corners at 9-7.
Freshman Calista Manuzza (North Caldwell, N.J.) made four stops in the cage in her collegiate debut while freshman Jodie Brine (Oxshott, U.K.) contributed four as well while playing the second half. Nealon turned away four shots in the opposing cage.
Sophomore Danielle van Rootselaar (Bilthoven, Netherlands) led the Bears with five shots, two on goal, while junior Lexi King (Granby, Conn.) and freshman Lindsey Ross (Woodbury, Conn.) also recorded shots on frame.Â
