DURHAM, N.H. - The Brown field hockey team was defeated by New Hampshire, 4-2, on Sunday at Memorial Field. Junior Lexi King (Granby, Conn.) had a goal and an assist while sophomore Danielle van Rootselaar (Bilthoven, Netherlands) added the Bears' second tally.
"Our effort was excellent today," said head coach Jill Reeve. "Our backs were tough as nails defensively and helped produce a lot of attacking play. We created many dangerous goal scoring opportunities. We are inches away from achieving the level we are capable of."
New Hampshire (3-3) had an answer on both of Brown's (1-4) goals on the day, scoring in under three minutes after each tally.Â
The Bears struck first in the contest to take a 1-0 lead at 8:53 on a goal by King. Senior Corinne Condie (St. Louis, Mo.) recorded the assist with a thru ball to King. New Hampshire responded quickly when Caron Finn knotted the game at the 11:14 mark. Shots were close for the first with the Wildcats holding a 3-2 edge.Â
Finn tallied her second of the afternoon at 24:47 for the second frame's only score as UNH took a 2-1 advantage into the half. Shots were again close as the Wildcats had a 4-2 lead. Penalty corners stood at 5-1 in favor of the home team, with the Bears recording their lone corner in the second.Â
Van Rootselaar recorded her first goal of the season on a redirection at 33:13 of the third to tie the game, 2-2. King notched the assist on the score, giving her three points in the contest.Â
The Wildcats again responded swiftly to the Bears' goal, with Jaiden Wittel netting a penalty stroke to put UNH ahead by one (3-2).
Finn completed the hat trick for the Wildcats at 53:54 of the fourth while the UNH defense held Brown to just one shot in the final frame.
UNH outshot the Brown overall, 16-9, but by no more than two shots in every period. Penalty corners stood at 6-2 in favor of UNH.Â
Senior Allee Ayles (Westwood, Mass.) made a total of seven stops in the cage for the Bears while her counterpart, Jemma Woods, had three. Â
Â
Brown will next return home to Goldberger Family Field to host a pair of games on Saturday, Sept. 21 and Sunday, Sept. 22. The Bears first welcome No. 20 Albany to town on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. while a matchup with Hofstra follows the day after, also a 1:00 p.m. start.Â
