PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Brown field hockey team was defeated by No. 18 Stanford, 6-0, on Tuesday at Goldberger Family Field. The Bears outshot the Cardinal, 11-8, through two quarters of play and equaled Stanford's game total of 17 but could not find the back of the cage.
"I was pleased with our performance today," said head coach Jill Reeve. "We created a lot of scoring opportunities and strong coordinated attacking play. We will need to toughen up defensively. We had some soft moments that cost us. The score was not indicative of the game."
Stanford (3-2) was led by Caroinne Zanolli who had two goals and Kelsey Bing who made six saves in the cage through three quarters. Brown (1-3) was led by sophomore Danielle van Rootselaar (Bilthoven, Netherlands) who totaled seven shots while senior Allee Ayles (Westwood, Mass.) turned away five shots in 45:00 of action.
The Bears outshot the Cardinal 7-6 in the first but the visitors would take a 2-0 lead at the end of the stanza with goals from Sarah Johnson (10:01) and Emma Alderton (14:16).
Stanford capitalized following its only penalty corner of the second when Phoebe Crosthwaite recorded a score at 26:15 for a 3-0 advantage. Brown again outshot its opponent, 4-2, and had a 2-1 edge in corners.
Zanolli put in her two goals in the third quarter at 34:48 and 43:00 while the Cardinals outshot the Bears for the first time in the contest, 6-1.
Stanford's Molly Redgroce added the final goal of the evening at 46:22. Van Rootselaar had a handful of chances for the Bears in the fourth, generating four shots with Hannah Santos saving the final attempt to keep Brown off the board.
Freshman Jodie Brine (Oxshott, U.K.) saw her first collegiate action in the cage while playing the fourth quarter for the Bears.
Overall, shots were tied at 17 for both teams, with Brown having the advantage in all but the third quarter. Penalty corners were also tied for the teams at five apiece, with Stanford registering the lone corners in the second half of the game, with one in both the third and fourth.
Brown will next hit the road and travel to Vermont on Friday, Sept. 13 for a 4:00 p.m. game and then head to New Hampshire on Sunday, Sept. 15 for a 3:00 p.m. contest.
Video of all Brown field hockey home contests and all Ivy League games, home and away, will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
