BURLINGTON, Vt. - The Brown field hockey team was defeated by Vermont, 4-2, on Friday at Moulton Winder Field. Seniors Hannah Leckey (Madison, Conn.) and Gina Openshaw (Annapolis, Md.) generated the Bears' scores for the day.
"This was certainly a disappointing performance," said head coach Jill Reeve. "We played passively against a team who simply played hard. We need to finish the opportunities we create up front."
The teams entered the half tied 1-1, with Vermont (2-2) generating a first quarter tally (3:13, Bailey Matthews) while Brown (1-3) received a second period score by Leckey at the 16:29 mark, her first of the season.
The Catamounts had a 4-1 shot advantage in the first while the Bears turned the table in the second with a 3-1 lead. Penalty corners were 2-1 in favor of Brown, with one corner in each quarter.
Even though Brown held a 4-2 shot advantage in the third, Vermont struck first in the second half when Ferry Clodagh registered a tally at 35:10 to put the Catamounts up 2-1.
Openshaw tied it up for the Bears at 46:30 of the fourth with her third of the year while senior Ali Dunning (Amersham, England.) assisted the tally. Vermont took the lead back at 50:54 with Matthews' second of the afternoon. Kate Hall scored less than five minutes later (55:48) for a two-goal cushion. Both teams generated a handful of opportunities, with Vermont holding a 7-5 edge in shots for the stanza. The Catamounts ended the second half with the lead in corners as well, 2-1 for each quarter.
In the cage, senior Allee Ayles (Westwood, Mass.) made one stop, coming in the first quarter, while freshman Jodie Brine (Oxshott, U.K.) added three stops, all in the fourth, while playing 18:07 minutes. Sierra Espeland turned away seven shots in the opposing net.
Brown will next wrap up its road trip at New Hampshire on Sunday, Sept. 15 starting at 3:00 p.m.
Video of all Brown field hockey home contests and all Ivy League games, home and away, will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
