
Softball Alumna Leung ’16 Earns Silver Medal with Canada at Pan Am Games

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University softball alumna Janet Leung '16 earned a silver medal with Softball Canada at the 2019 Pan American Games held from August 4-10 in Lima, Peru.
A native of Mississauga, Ontario, Leung helped Team Canada post a 5-2 record at the tournament, including a 4-1 mark in pool play. Leung tallied a key RBI in Canada's 3-2 win over the United States in the semifinals, allowing the team to advance directly to the gold medal game. Playing in six games with five starts at shortstop, she totaled 11 putouts and seven assists.

Leung has established herself as one of Canada's top infielders since graduating from Brown in 2016. After competing for Canada at the junior level in 2013, Leung took part in national team selection camps in 2014 and 2015 before competing with the national team in the summer of 2017 at the Canada Cup and Japan Cup.
During the summer of 2018, Leung won gold at the Canada Cup – earning the tournament's Best Defensive Player award – before capturing bronze at the Women's Softball World Championship. Earlier this summer, Leung helped Canada win a second consecutive gold medal at the Canada Cup and competed in National Pro Fastpitch Softball with the Canadian Wild.
A four-time All-Ivy selection, Leung finished her career third all-time at Brown in at bats (493) and fifth in doubles (35) while starting all 151 games over her four years. For her Brown career, she posted a .304 batting average, 150 hits, 35 doubles, 79 runs, and 52 RBIs.
Softball Canada is next set to compete at the WBSC Americas Olympic Qualifier in Surrey, British Columbia from August 25 to September 1 with two teams from the event automatically qualifying for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
