Men’s Crew Takes Opening Race at Henley Royal Regatta

HENLEY-ON-THAMES, England – The Brown University men's crew kicked off the 2019 Henley Royal Regatta with a victory in the Temple Challenge Cup to open the prestigious five-day event on Wednesday.

The Bears opened the first day of heats competition with a victory over Caius Boat Club of Cambridge, winning by nearly two lengths in a time of 6.23, as the crew took control in the first two minutes and held strong for the open water victory. Brown is one of 64 total entries in the Temple Challenge Cup, an event made up of eights from colleges and schools.

"It was important to get the win today on the first day of the Regatta," said head coach Paul Cooke. "Every race is an elimination round so there is always a bit of tension. They handled the situation well and they can make a few small adjustments that will make them better in the next round."

Brown is competing at Henley for the third straight year and the fourth time in the last six years. The Bears reached the quarterfinals of the Temple Challenge Cup last summer. Brown made its first trip to Henley in 1966 and has captured the Ladies' Challenge Plate in 1984, 1993, 2000 and 2009. Bruno also claimed the Thames Challenge Cup in 1994.
