Carly Paul Closes Decorated Career with Second Team Accolades in Heptathlon
AUSTIN, Texas – Senior Carly Paul (Fort Collins, Colo.) of the Brown women's track & field team earned Second Team All-American honors in the heptathlon Saturday to close the NCAA Championship at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas.
Paul, a fifth-year senior, totaled 5,535 total points for 14th overall in the heptathlon, which is second-best all-time in the Ivy League behind her own league record of 5,632 set earlier this season at the Tennessee Relays. Paul had a strong first day on Friday, highlighted by a fourth-place finish in the high jump (5-10) and a personal-best time of 25.17 in the 200 meters. She added another lifetime personal record in the 800 meters (2:19.10) on Saturday.
"Carly had a great two days--it was a fitting way for such an accomplished athlete to end her college career," said head coach Tim Springfield. "She has meant so much to our program, and it was very gratifying to see her compete so well and with such joy at the very highest level her final time wearing a Brown uniform."
Paul improved on her entry seed by one spot and wrapped up her decorated career with back-to-back All-American honors after she was named to the second team in the high jump last season. She earned one of the 24 direct spots to the national meet in the heptathlon since the event is not held at the regional championships.
Paul is the second All-American for Brown track & field this season after Owen Russell earned second team accolades in the weight throw at the indoor championship. She is also the fifth All-American for the women's team in as many years, following her high jump finish last season, along with Shanelle DeJournett in 2017 (high jump), O'Sha Williams in 2016 (triple jump) and Josie Natrasevschi in 2015 (discus).
She earned Second Team All-Ivy honors with a runner-up performance in the heptathlon at the Ivy League Championship this season and also competed in the high jump and long jump at the NCAA East Regional. Paul is a former Ivy League champion in the heptathlon (2018) and indoor pentathlon (2018).
