PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior Jamie Smith tallied three goals and three assists as Brown University women's water polo defeated Connecticut College, 14-8, on Tuesday night at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center in Brown's first home game since Feb. 3.
After playing 20 straight games away from Providence, the Bears (16-11) earned a victory over the Camels (7-8) in their return to their home pool, taking an 11-3 lead at halftime on their way to the win.
"We were able to get a lot of different players into the game tonight, and it was a good opportunity to get extended game experience for a number of our players," Brown head coach Felix Mercado said. "Now we'll turn our attention to our final league weekend out at Bucknell on Saturday and Sunday."
Smith (Lexington, Ky.) paced the Bears with her six points on her three goals and three assists. Senior McKenna Miller (Danville, Calif.) posted two goals and two assists, and sophomore Riley Hughes (Evanston, Ill.) notched two goals and an assist.
Senior Allison Woo (Arcadia, Calif.) netted two goals while senior Charlotte Rosenberg (Chicago, Ill.), sophomore Kaitlyn Cook (Los Gatos, Calif.), and freshman Maureen O'Malley (Buffalo, N.Y.) each registered a goal and an assist. Junior Julia Armitage (Cleveland Heights, Ohio) added a goal.
Freshman Dagmara Czajka (San Diego, Calif.) scored a goal in the first quarter before making six saves as a goalkeeper in the fourth quarter. Freshman net-minder Marley Presiado (Newport Beach, Calif.) stopped 10 shots over the first three quarters and tacked on an assist.
The Bears opened the game with a 5-1 lead at the end of the first quarter. Miller initiated the game's scoring with a goal in transition off a feed from Presiado before Woo scored on the inside off a pass from Miller. Following a Camel marker, Czajka, Hughes, and Smith closed the quarter's scoring.
Woo and Smith capped a 5-0 run for the Bears early in the second quarter as the hosts pulled ahead 7-1 with 5:42 to play in the frame. After Conn. College came within 8-3 despite a goal from Cook, Hughes, O'Malley, and Rosenberg concluded the half's scoring with three straight goals, giving Brown an 11-3 advantage at the break.
Smith and Miller each scored early in the third quarter – and assisted on one another's goals – as the Bears remained up 13-4 at the 6:00 mark. After two Camel goals, Armitage netted the final goal of the third quarter, bringing the margin to 14-6 heading to the fourth quarter. Conn. College scored the only two goals of the fourth quarter.
Next, Brown competes in its final CWPA weekend of the year with league games against George Washington (Apr. 13, 11:30 a.m.), No. 15 Princeton (Apr. 13, 5:00 p.m.), and St. Francis (Pa.) (Apr. 14, 9:00 a.m.) in Lewisburg, Pa.
