
Women’s Water Polo Beats GW, 11-7, Falls to No. 15 Princeton, 8-4

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Brown University women's water polo defeated George Washington University, 11-7, and fell to No. 15 Princeton University, 8-4, in a pair of Collegiate Water Polo Association games on Saturday at Bucknell University's Kinney Natatorium.
The Bears (17-12, 1-3 CWPA) used a 5-0 run to take an 8-3 lead in the third quarter on their way to the win over the Colonials (5-11, 0-4 CWPA) in game one before dropping the decision to the Tigers (18-8, 4-1 CWPA) in game two.
"It was good to get the win over George Washington to start the day," Brown head coach Felix Mercado said. "I give credit to Princeton for getting off to a good start against us in game two. We're looking forward to getting back in the pool against St. Francis tomorrow morning in our final conference game of the regular season."
Freshman Lili Akin (Santa Barbara, Calif.) scored a game-high three goals in Brown's win over George Washington, sophomore Carissa Perez (Pico Rivera, Calif.) tallied six assists between the two games, and junior goalkeeper Lauren Burns (Long Grove, Ill.) made 20 saves on the day, including 13 stops against GW.
Next, Brown closes the weekend in Lewisburg with a CWPA match-up against St. Francis (Pa.) on Sunday, Apr. 14, at 9:00 a.m.
Game 1 – Brown 11, George Washington 7
Freshman Lili Akin scored three goals to propel Brown to an 11-7 win over George Washington in its first CWPA game of the day on Saturday morning.
With the score tied at 3-3 in the second quarter, the Bears used a 5-0 run to take an 8-3 lead over the Colonials in the third quarter on their way to the win.
Akin (Santa Barbara, Calif.) tallied three goals, two steals, and an assist in the game while sophomore Carissa Perez (Pico Rivera, Calif.) posted two goals and four assists.
Senior McKenna Miller (Danville, Calif.) totaled two goals, two assists, and two ejections drawn, and classmate Maigrie McDougal (Sacramento, Calif.) registered a goal, an assist, a field block, and two ejections drawn.
Freshman Dagmara Czajka (San Diego, Calif.) contributed a goal, an assist, a steal, and two field blocks, senior Carmen Rosas (Schaumburg, Ill.) added a goal, and a steal, and junior Lexi Atwell (La Jolla, Calif.) tacked on a goal.
In the cage, junior goalie Lauren Burns (Long Grove, Ill.) stopped 13 shots.
Brown stood tied at 2-2 with GW after one quarter behind goals from Miller and Akin. Tallies from McDougal and Perez in the second quarter pushed the Bears ahead 4-3 at halftime.
The Bears scored the first four goals of the second half, capping a 5-0 run and taking an 8-3 edge with 3:06 to play in the third quarter. Rosas started the frame's scoring before Perez, Akin, and Miller found the back of the net. The Colonials netted the stanza's final two goals to pull within 8-5 heading to the fourth quarter.
After GW cut its deficit to 8-6 early in the final frame, Atwell and Akin responded with back-to-back goals to put Brown up 10-6 with 3:55 to go. The Colonials scored the contest's final two goals.

Perez (Pico Rivera, Calif.) paced Brown with her three points while freshman Katie Klein (Lafayette, Calif.) posted a goal, a steal, and three ejections drawn. Senior Maigrie McDougal (Sacramento, Calif.) and sophomore Riley Hughes (Evanston, Ill.) each netted a goal.
Junior Lexi Atwell (La Jolla, Calif.) compiled an assist and a steal, and freshman Lili Akin (Santa Barbara, Calif.) came up with two steals.
Junior net-minder Lauren Burns (Long Grove, Calif.) turned aside seven shots alongside a steal.
After Princeton took a 4-0 lead to open the game, including a 3-0 edge at the end of the first quarter, McDougal stopped the run with a goal with 4:03 to play in the first half. A goal from Klein inside of the second quarter's final minute brought Brown within 6-2 at the break.
The Tigers scored the only marker of the third quarter before consecutive tallies from Perez and Hughes to open the fourth quarter brought Brown within 7-4 with 4:09 remaining. Princeton netted the contest's final goal with 43 seconds to go.
