NEW YORK, N.Y. - The Brown men's tennis team was defeated by No. 16 Columbia, 4-1, on Sunday at the Dick Savitt Tennis Center. Sophomore Ching Lam (Sai Kung, Hong Kong) and junior Jacob Walker (Bethesda, Md.) highlighted the Bears' doubles point by defeating the 22nd ranked team.
"We are making progress every day and it showed today," said head coach Tim Gray. "Winning the doubles point against the 16th ranked team in the nation shows that we are heading in the right direction. Ching Lam and Jacob Walker did a phenomenal job securing the doubles point by beating the 22nd ranked doubles team in the country. But they could not have done it without Peter Litsky and Ted van Eck grabbing the win at number three doubles. It was an electric atmosphere and we were able to get significant early momentum and quiet the Columbia fans. But all the credit to Columbia for showing why they are the 16th ranked team in the country. We pushed them extremely hard and in the singles and we got their attention. Unfortunately, they were just a little too tough in the big points. Extremely proud of how these guys battled today."
Columbia started the day with a win in second doubles but Brown would claim the point when junior Peter Litsky (St. Petersburg, Fla.) and sophomore Teddy van Eck (Rye, N.Y.) recorded a 6-4 victory in the third spot before Lam and Walker upset No. 22 Jack Lin and William Matheson, 7-5, to clinch the point.
The Lions fielded ranked players in the first through third position and opened the singles round by taking first singles, 6-1, 6-1. Columbia was then able to close out the match with wins in fourth, sixth and second singles, respectively.
The Bears will next host No. 39 Dartmouth on Friday, April 12 before traveling to No. 45 Harvard on Sunday, April 14. Friday's match versus the Big Green will start at 2:00 p.m. while Sunday's match against the Crimson will begin at 1:00 p.m.
