PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Brown men's tennis team was edged by No. 39 Dartmouth, 4-3, on Friday at the Pizzitola Sports Center. After trailing 2-0, the Bears pulled ahead 3-2 with three-consecutive wins but the Big Green would seal their victory with wins in the final two matches.
"Every match we are getting closer to making the breakthrough that we've worked so hard for," said head coach Tim Gray. "I am so proud of the effort that these young men are giving out there. We nearly knocked off the Ivy Champions. We haven't been in that situation enough just yet but we are gaining momentum. I am so proud of each and every member of this team. They are bringing their best every day. This one certainly stings, but we'll be ready to fight again on Sunday at Harvard."
After Dartmouth won the first doubles match, freshman Roger Chou (Austin, Texas) and senior Charles Tan (Austin, Texas) tied the round with a 7-5 victory in the second position. Junior Peter Litsky (St. Petersburg, Fla.) and sophomore Teddy van Eck (Rye, N.Y.) put up a good fight in third doubles but fell, 7-5.
The Big Green pushed their lead to 2-0 with a win in first singles but the Bears came roaring back and won three-straight matches to take the lead. Tan started the run with a 6-2, 6-4 showing in the fourth position. Junior Jacob Walker (Bethesda, Md.) next posted a hard fought victory in third singles, 7-6 (12), 6-3. Sophomore Ching Lam (Sai Kung, Hong Kong) then recorded a 7-5, 7-6 (3) triumph in the second spot in another battle. Dartmouth, however, would win fifth singles (6-4, 7-6 (5)) and sixth singles (7-6 (3), 6-2) to take the match.
The Bears next travel to Cambridge, Mass. on Sunday, April 14 to take on No. 37 Harvard starting at 1:00 p.m.
