Tomlinson picks up win behind two runs in seven innings
ITHACA, N.Y. – Will Tomlinson (Irvine, Calif.) provided seven innings of two-run ball as the Brown baseball team topped Cornell, 7-3, on Sunday to complete the three-game weekend road sweep in Ivy League play at Hoy Field.
Â
Brown (8-17, 5-4) earned its fourth straight win and outscored the Big Red by a 20-7 margin over the series. Cornell dropped to 7-16, 2-7.
Â
"Tomlinson was outstanding today, and our offense scored in bunches to give us a good cushion," said head coach Grant Achilles. "It takes a lot of toughness and determination to sweep, much less on the road, and I'm very proud of how our team competed this weekend."
Â
Garett Delano (Callahan, Fla.) hit 5-for-12 (.417) with four runs scored in the series, while Parke Phillips (Venice, Fla.) batted .400 and Mark Sluys (Gig Harbor, Wash.) drove in four runs. Brown enjoyed strong starting pitching throughout the weekend as Delano and Collin Garner (St. Augustine, Fla.) joined Tomlinson for 22.2 innings and a 1.19 combined ERA.
Â
Tomlinson earned his first win of the season on Sunday as he allowed two earned runs over seven innings with one walk and four strikeouts. Dustin Baird (Indianapolis, Ind.) and Bobby Leyman (North Hampton, N.H.) pitched back-to-back hitless innings to close the game.
Â
Sluys had a pair of hits with two runs and two RBIs, while Rich Ciufo (Medford, N.Y.) and Joe Lomuscio (West Roxbury, Mass.) also had two hits apiece.
Â
Brown struck first in the top of the second when Ciufo hit an RBI single and Sluys followed with two-run home run for his fourth homer of the season. The Bears added four runs on five hits in the fifth frame as four different players picked up RBIs.
Â
Tomlinson kept the Big Red off the board until the seventh inning, when the home squad picked up two runs to cut the lead to five. Cornell scored one more run on a wild pitch in the eight, but Leyman closed the door with three straight outs in the ninth to seal the weekend sweep.
Â
Brown will host Bryant in midweek action on Wednesday before the Bears welcome Dartmouth for a three-game set next weekend.
