PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's tennis team defeated Cornell, 4-1, on Saturday at the Brown Varsity Tennis Courts. The Bears won the doubles point and took that momentum into the singles' round for their first Ivy League victory.
"The women showed a lot of fight and resilience today," said head coach Lucie Schmidhauser. "Cornell battled hard, but we were able to step up in crucial moments and close out matches. Alessandra and Juliana really stepped up in doubles and fought back from 4-5 down in the deciding doubles match by raising their energy and winning 12 out of the last 13 points with extremely aggressive play. Devon and Taylor showed great leadership in singles with focused play and fight. Courtney overcame some "match closing" nerves and was able to pull her game together to get the win."
Doubles play was back-and-forth with freshman Sophia Reddy (Eden Prairie, Minn.) and freshman Ryan Peus (Palos Verdes, Calif.) recording the first win of the round in third doubles with a 7-5 victory. The Big Red took the win in the first spot, 7-6 (0), but the Bears responded by claiming the point in the next match, with junior Juliana Simon (Los Angeles, Calif.) and freshman Alessandra Bianco (Chicago, Ill.) besting their opponents 7-5.
Cornell tied up the match, 1-1, with a win in third singles to open singles play. Junior Devon Jack (San Marino, Calif.) pulled the Bears ahead again with a 6-3, 6-1 showing in the first position. Sophomore Courtney Kowalsky (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) next won, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4, in a battle in the fourth spot and senior Taylor Cosme (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) cemented the win for Brown with her 6-5, 7-6 finish in second singles.
The Bears are back in action tomorrow (April 7), hosting No. 35 Columbia at 1:00 p.m.
