PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's tennis team was defeated by No. 35 Columbia, 4-0, on Sunday at the Brown Varsity Tennis Courts. The Lions won the doubles point and claimed the match in singles' play despite two matches going to extra sets.
"Columbia competed with a much greater sense of urgency than our team," said head coach Lucie Schmidhauser. "We came very close to turning the tide in several matches, but Columbia was simply tougher than us. We need to continue to work on playing disciplined tennis and be willing to be aggressive when the right opportunity is given. I look forward to seeing how our players will respond in the next match against Dartmouth on Friday."
Columbia opened the day with a 6-2 win in third doubles and a 6-1 showing in the second spot for a 1-0 match advantage.
The Lions next went up 2-0 with two 6-2 set victories in fourth singles. The Bears battled in the next two matches but Columbia would take both for the match victory. Junior Devon Jack (San Marino, Calif.) was edged 4-6, 6-7 (1) in the first spot while senior Taylor Cosme (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) opened her second singles match with a 6-2 win but fell, 1-6, 5-7.
The Bears next travel to Dartmouth on Friday, April 12 for a 2:00 p.m. match before returning to Providence on Sunday, April 14 to host Harvard starting at 1:00 p.m.
