ATHENS, Ga. – Brown University gymnastics freshman Mei Li Costa competed on bars at the 2019 NCAA Women's Gymnastics Championships Athens Regional, scoring a 9.750 on Friday night at the University of Georgia's Stegeman Coliseum.
Â
Competing as an individual event specialist on bars in Session II of the NCAA Regional Second Round, Costa came in a tie for 19th place out of 28 gymnasts in the event in Session II with her 9.750. Between the two sessions, she finished in a tie for 40th place out of 53 competitors. Costa rotated with No. 16 California and competed on bars during rotation four.
Â
"Tonight was a great opportunity for Mei Li to compete at NCAA Regionals alongside some of the best gymnasts in the country," Brown head coach Sara Carver-Milne said. "We're looking forward to having her and many of her teammates back in the gym for USAG Nationals next weekend."
Â
Making her debut at the NCAA Regional Championships, Costa entered the weekend as the No. 11 gymnast in the Northeast and No. 2 gymnast in the ECAC on bars with a 9.840 national qualifying score (NQS). This season, she tied the program record on bars with a 9.900.
Â
Costa won four bars titles on the year, collected three ECAC Rookie of the Week awards, garnered First Team All-ECAC on bars, and gained Second Team All-Ivy Classic on bars. Costa became the first Bear to earn a spot at regionals since Caroline Morant '17 qualified as an individual all-around performer in 2017.
Â
Next, Costa and the Bears' other USAG individual qualifiers will compete at the USA Gymnastics Collegiate National Championships in Bridgeport, Conn., from Apr. 12-14.
