PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University wrestling seniors Ian Butterbrodt and CJ LaFragola have earned NWCA All-Academic honors, the National Wrestling Coaches Association announced on Friday.
A native of North Andover, Mass., Butterbrodt qualified for the 2019 NCAA Championships, winning three matches and advancing to the round of 12. He placed second at the EIWA Championships at 285 pounds, earned First Team All-Ivy honors, and gained Academic All-Ivy accolades. Butterbrodt won the program's Michael T. Wallace Most Valuable Performer Award after going 21-8 overall and 11-0 in duals.
A native of Little Egg Harbor, N.J., LaFragola finished his career as a three-time NCAA qualifier, three-time All-Ivy honoree, and the holder of three 20-win seasons. In 2019, he qualified for the NCAA Championships, earned Second Team All-Ivy honors, and finished fifth at the EIWA Championships at 184 pounds. LaFragola won the 184-pound weight class at the Bearcat Open and closed the year with a 24-11 overall record and 12-2 dual mark.
As a team, Brown posted the No. 8 GPA in the nation, ranking in the top 12 for the eighth straight year. Brown came in 12th in 2018, second in 2017, third in 2016, fifth in 2015, fourth in 2014, sixth in 2013, and eighth in 2012.
The NWCA determines the team grade-point average using a system that includes 12 student-athletes from each program. A total of 10 of these came from the wrestlers that were entries in the NCAA tournament conference qualifier. The NWCA also uses a system, which combines athletic and academic success, in determining individual qualifiers.
