BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Freshman Mei Li Costa won the bars title, and the Bears totaled six All-America honors as Brown University gymnastics completed competition at the 2019 USA Gymnastics Collegiate National Championships on Sunday afternoon at the University of Bridgeport's Wheeler Recreation Center.
Â
Competing in the Individual Event Finals, Costa (Lawrenceville, N.J.) became just the second Bear to win either a USAG event or all-around title, joining Diana Walters '16 who won the USAG all-around title in 2014.
Â
"We are so unbelievably proud of Mei Li for winning the bars title and to our five gymnasts who won six All-America honors," Brown head coach Sara Carver-Milne said. "They all performed incredibly well on the national stage. This was a great way to end our 2019 season."
Â
Overall, the Bears tallied five USAG All-Americans who garnered six USAG All-American awards. Costa earned First Team on bars alongside her event title while senior Julia Green (Exton, Pa.) gained First Team on beam and Second Team on vault. Green finished her career with four USAG All-America honors, including three All-America awards on vault.
Â
Sophomore Alyssa Garnder (Angola, N.Y.) garnered First Team on vault, and fellow sophomore Kate Nelson (Montara, Calif.) earned First Team on bars. Sophomore Rose Domonoske (Park City, Utah) gained Second Team on beam, serving as an alternate on the event.
Â
The Bears tallied their most USAG All-Americans and most USAG All-American awards since 2016 when Brown registered six All-Americans and 11 All-American awards.
Â
During Sunday's competition, Costa took first place on bars behind a score of 9.8500 while Gardner placed fifth on vault with a 9.7375. Green scored a 9.6750 on beam for 14th place, and Nelson tallied a 9.1000 on bars for 12th place.
Â
All four gymnasts advanced to Sunday's event finals after placing in the top five of their respective events during Friday's team preliminary sessions. On Friday, Costa tied the school record on bars with a 9.900 while Gardner won the vault title in session two.
