Women’s Lacrosse Falls at Cornell, 10-7

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Brown women's lacrosse team was defeated by Cornell, 10-7, on Saturday afternoon at Schoellkopf Field. The Big Red benefitted from a 6-3 lead after the first half and equaled Brown's total of four goals in the second. Cornell improves to 8-4 overall with the win and 4-1 in league play while the Bears fall to 6-7 on the year and 2-3 in conference action.
"I thought we battled very hard today," said head coach Keely McDonald. "It's a tough loss and I have no doubt that this group will come back hungry to attack the week."
Freshman Sophia DeRosa (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.) led the Bears in scoring with two goals and two assists while freshman Claire Jeschke (Syracuse, N.Y.) added a goal and an assist. Cornell held sophomore Risa Mosenthal (Campton, N.H.) scoreless for the first time in her career. Mosenthal had previously scored at least two goals in each of her first 26 collegiate games.
Junior KC Williams (Duxbury, Mass.) opened the game's scoring at 27:29 but Cornell would counter with three-straight to take a 3-1 advantage at 15:46. The Bears tied it up after scores from DeRosa (13:37) and senior Zoe Verni (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) (11:15).
The Big Red would end the half with three-consecutive tallies to take a 6-3 lead into the break. Shots were 16-9 in favor of the home team while draws were even at 5-5.
Sophomore Mason Warble (Bronxville, N.Y.) was the first to score in the second at 27:57 to pull the Bears within two (6-4). Cornell would again go on a 3-0 run to increase its advantage to 9-4 at the midway mark (16:06).
Brown would then make a strong push with three-straight of its own. Sophomore Maggie Fowler (Bethesda, Md.) started the run at 13:57 while Jeschke followed at 8:10. The Big Red would however keep the Bears off the board until 2:16 when DeRosa scored the third goal of the sequence, bringing the score to 9-7.
Cornell was able to fight off the Brown attack for the remainder of the contest and Tomasina Leska further secured the victory for the Big Red with a tally at 0:23.
Each team registered 12 shots in the second while the Bears had the edge in draw controls, 5-4. Katie McGahan was solid in net for Cornell in the second, stopping eight shots in the period on her way to 13 overall. Freshman Erin Tucker (Centerport, N.Y.) made a total of 10 saves on the day, five in each half, for her eighth game of the season with double-digit saves.
Olivia Jensen led the Big Red in scoring with three goals and an assist while Leska added a hat trick.
The Bears will next close out the regular season with back-to-back home games at Stevenson-Pincince Field, starting with Harvard on Saturday, April 20 at 4:00 p.m. and ending with Columbia for Senior Day on Saturday, April 27 at 1:00 p.m.
