PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University gymnastics will take part in the USA Gymnastics Collegiate National Championships as the Bears' 10 individual qualifiers are set to compete at the University of Bridgeport's Wheeler Recreation Center from Friday, April 12 to Sunday, April 14.

THE PREVIOUS OUTING: ECAC CHAMPIONSHIP
Sophomore Kate Nelson (Montara, Calif.) won the bars title as Brown placed fifth at the 2019 ECAC Division I Women's Gymnastics Championship with a 192.225 on Saturday, Mar. 23 at Cornell University's Newman Arena.

Nelson captured her first career ECAC title and also gained First Team All-ECAC on bars in the process. Senior Gabrielle Hechtman (Bellmore, N.Y.) earned All-ECAC on vault for the second time in her career, collecting First Team All-ECAC accolades with a third-place finish while freshman Mei Li Costa (Lawrenceville, N.J.) garnered First Team All-ECAC on bars with a third-place finish. Sophomore Emma Hansen (Cincinnati, Ohio) earned recognition as an ECAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Brown posted a 193.825 – its second-highest team score of the year – and finished fourth in Team Preliminary Session No. 2 at the 2018 USA Gymnastics Collegiate National Championships.

Senior Regan Butchness (Barrington, Ill.) earned First Team USAG All-America honors on beam for the third time in her career while both senior Claire Ryan (Greenwood, Minn.) and freshman Emma Hansen (Cincinnati, Ohio) gained First Team USAG All-America on bars for the first time. Junior Julia Green (Exton, Pa.) garnered Second Team All-America on vault for the second time in her career, serving as an alternate on the event.

THE FORMAT
The top two teams from each preliminary session will advance to the team finals on Saturday, April 13 at 7 p.m. ET. Individual event finals will take place on Sunday, April 14 at 1 p.m. ET with the top five gymnasts on each event in each preliminary session on Friday qualifying for Sunday's event finals and earning All-American status.

All student-athletes that advance to the individual event finals earn First Team USAG All-America honors while alternates for the event finals gain Second Team USAG All-America. In the all-around, the top eight performers between the two team preliminary sessions gain First Team USAG All-America while the ninth and 10th place finishers garner Second Team USAG All-America.

Brown made six straight appearances as a team at USAGs from 2013-18 after qualifying as a team for the first time in 2013. In 2016, Brown advanced to the team finals for the second time in program history behind a program record score of 195.175. In 2013, the Bears advanced to the team finals, finishing fourth. In 2014, Diana Walters '16 (Austin, Texas) won the all-around title.

Brown carries two gymnasts on its roster that have previously won USAG All-America honors in senior Julia Green (Exton, Pa.) and sophomore Emma Hansen (Cincinnati, Ohio). Green garnered Second Team USAG All-America on vault in 2017 and 2018 while Hansen gained First Team USAG All-America on bars in 2018. In 2016, assistant coach Jim Hayes earned USAG Assistant Coach of the Year accolades.

IVY CLASSIC
Freshman Mei Li Costa (Lawrenceville, N.J.) won the vault title, and Brown scored a 192.200 at the 2019 Ivy Classic on Sunday, Feb. 24 at The Palestra at the University of Pennsylvania. Costa led a group of five Brown gymnasts who totaled seven All-Ivy Classic honors as she captured First Team All-Ivy Classic on vault behind her event win and Second Team All-Ivy Classic on bars.

COSTA QUALIFIES FOR NCAA REGIONALS
Freshman Mei Li Costa (Lawrenceville, N.J.) earned selection into the 2019 NCAA Women's Gymnastics Athens Regional as an individual event specialist on bars. She scored a 9.750 on Friday, Apr. 5 at the University of Georgia's Stegeman Coliseum, finishing in a tie for 19th place out of 28 gymnasts in Session II. Making her debut at the NCAA Regional Championships, Costa entered the weekend as the No. 11 gymnast in the Northeast and No. 2 gymnast in the ECAC on bars with a 9.840 national qualifying score (NQS). This season, she tied the program record on bars with a 9.900.

EVENT TITLES
Brown totaled 18 event titles on the season with freshman Mei Li Costa (Lawrenceville, N.J.) leading the way with nine titles – five on vault and four on bars. Other gymnasts with multiple titles included freshman Sophia Petrillo (Stoneham, Mass.) with two all-around titles and senior Julia Green (Exton, Pa.) with two floor titles.

Brown totaled seven ECAC weekly awards on the year as a Brown gymnast won an ECAC weekly award in each of the first six weeks of the season. Freshman Mei Li Costa (Lawrenceville, N.J.) captured ECAC Rookie of the Week three times while senior Cassidy Jung (San Marino, Calif.) claimed Specialist of the Week on Jan. 23. Senior Morgan Hagenbuch (Norwich, N.Y.) and sophomores Alyssa Gardner (Angola, N.Y.) and Kate Nelson (Montara, Calif.) each won ECAC Coaches Choice accolades once.
