Men's Basketball Falls To Loyola Marymount, 81-63, In CBI Second Round

Los Angeles, Calif. – The CBI bracket certainly wasn't kind to Brown, who had to travel 3,000-plus miles to California after last week's win over UAB to battle Loyola Marymount, who play out of the West Coast Conference.
The Bears were unable to overcome a talented and physical Loyola Marymount squad, falling to the Lions, 81-63, Monday evening at Gersten Pavilion in the second round of the Roman College Basketball Invitational.
Loyola Marymount (22-11) advances to the semifinal round of the CBI, while Brown completes its season with a 20-12 overall mark.
"LMU did a great job of forcing us into turnovers and then converting points off turnovers," said Brown head coach Mike Martin. "We didn't play out best, but they certainly had a lot to do with it. It certainly doesn't take away from the year we've had. I'm proud of our young men, appreciate all they've given, and excited about the future."
Despite the loss, it was a remarkable season for the Bears, punctuated by a school record 20-win season. Along the way, Brown won its first postseason game ever, posted school records for non-league wins (12) and home wins (13), and featured the Ivy League's Defensive Player of the Year, senior Obi Okolie (Ajax, Ontario).
Okolie led the Bears with 14 points, hitting 4-of-7 field goals and 4-of-4 free throws. He completed his brilliant Brown career with 1,067 career points, 25thbest in Bears' basketball history.
Senior Chris Sullivan (Wilmette, IL) also scored in double figures for Brown with 11 points. Junior Brandon Anderson (Mahwah, NJ) chipped in with nine points, and the Bears received a solid effort from 6-8 freshman center Jaylan Gainey (Greensboro, NC), who scored five points, blocked three shots and grabbed four rebounds.
The difference in the game proved to be in the turnover column where the Bears turned it over 20 times, leading to 35 Loyola Marymount points. LMU also had a 31-25 rebounding advantage over the Bears.
James Batemon paced the Lions with a game high 21 points to lead four LMU players in double figures, including Joe Quintana (12 points), Mattias Markusson (11 points) and Zafir Williams (11 points).
Trailing, 33-25, with 7:29 remaining in the opening half, Brown went on a 9-0 run to grab their first lead, 34-33, on two free throws by Brandon Anderson.
Loyola Marymount out-scored the Bears, 11-4 to end the half and pull ahead by a 44-37 margin at intermission, with Petr Herman scoring six of the 11 points for the Lions.
The Lions opened up the second half and broke the game open with an 17-10 run to pull ahead, 61-47, on a trey by Joe Quintana with 13:12 remaining.
The Bears could get no closer than 12 points for the remainder of the game, 68-56, with 7:56 remaining on a layup by sophomore Tamenang Choh (Lowell, MA).
