Providence, R.I. – Brown junior Josh Howard (Charlotte, NC) came off the bench to score a game high 16 points and lead Brown to a 75-51 win over Cornell to gain sole possession of fourth place in the Ivy League standings.
The win lifts the Bears to 18-10 overall, one win short of the school record, and 6-6 in the Ivy League. Cornell falls to 13-15 overall, tied with Penn for fifth place at 5-7 in the league.
The Ivy League Tournament starts in two weeks with the top four teams earning playoff berths. Brown closes its regular season next weekend, traveling to Princeton, NJ, on Friday, March 8 for a matchup against Princeton at 4:00 pm on ESPNU, and then on to Philadelphia, PA for a showdown with Penn on Saturday, March 9 at the Palestra, starting at 6:00 pm on ESPN+.
Brown's bench made the difference in the game, out-scoring the Big Red by a 44-14 margin.
"We came back from a tough loss once again with our guys showing tremendous resilience and competitiveness," said Brown head coach Mike Martin. "We played outstanding team defense, but what Obi (Okolie) did to defend Cornell's Matt Morgan was special."
Howard, who missed a month with a broken nose before returning last night, connected on 6--of-7 field goals, including 2-of-2 treys and 2-of 2 free throws.
With 14 points tonight, Brown senior Obi Okolie (Ajax, Ontario) became the 30thplayer in Brown basketball history to score 1,000 or more points, now with 1,003 career points. "It was great being able to score 1,000 points, especially with my entire family at the game for the first time," said Okolie. "It means a lot to me to be a part of a winning team."
Brown sophomore Tamenang Choh (Lowell, MA) had 11 points, six rebounds and five assists, while junior Zach Hunsaker (North Salt Lake City, UT) added 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the field. Junior Brandon Anderson (Mahwah, NJ) chipped in with 10 points and four rebounds for the Bears.
Morgan's 14 points and nine rebounds paced the Big Red, while Joel Davis added 11 points.
Brown trailed by five points, 26-21, following a layup by Cornell's Davis with 3:58 left in the half. The Bears closed the half with a 12-2 run, sparked by four points by Anderson to grab a 33-28 lead at intermission.
A four-point play by Hunsaker, who was fouled on a made trey, followed by a dunk by Choh and a layup by Hunsaker, lifted the Bears to a 45-32 advantage with 14:10 left on the clock.
The Bears extended their lead to 16 points, 50-34, with 11:43 remaining on a free throw by freshman David Mitchell (Roxbury, MA).
