PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's tennis team defeated Stony Brook, 6-1, on Saturday afternoon at the Pizzitola Sports Center. The Bears won the doubles point and then grabbed victories in the first five singles matches en route to their victory.
"Today's match showed our players that even though you may not always play your best tennis, you can come out on top by outcompeting your opponent," said head coach Lucie Schmidhauser. "It was great having Devon Jack back in the lineup after a back injury, as she executed really well and stayed focused, intense and positive her entire singles match. Stony Brook was a tough opponent today and I was proud of the team for fighting hard on every court throughout the entire match."
Brown opened by taking the doubles point with a 6-3 win by senior Katie Ta (Mission Viejo, Calif.) and freshman Sophia Reddy (Eden Prairie, Minn.) in the third spot and a 6-4 showing from sophomore Courtney Kowalsky (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) and freshman Ryan Peus (Palos Verdes, Calif.) in first singles.
Junior Devon Jack (San Marino, Calif.) started things in singles play, taking her third singles match, 6-3, 6-1, to increase the Bears advantage to 2-0. Brown kept rolling and took the next four matches, with wins by Kowalsky (6-3, 6-3, fourth), Reddy (6-1, 6-2, second), Cosme (7-5, 7-5, first) and Peus (6-3, 6-0, sixth). Stony Brook won its lone match in the fifth spot to close out the day's action.
The Bears next host Memphis at the Pizzitola Sports Center on Friday, March 22 at 4:00 p.m.
