PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's tennis team edged Memphis, 4-3, on Friday at the Pizzitola Sports Center. Senior Katie Ta (Mission Viejo, Calif.) won the final match of the day to break a 3-3 tie and give the Bears the victory.
"Today's match was very exciting from start to finish," said head coach Lucie Schmidhauser. "There were some momentum swings in almost every match and I was proud of the team for the way they competed and how they held themselves throughout their matches. We continue to improve our doubles play and today's doubles point win really made a huge difference in the outcome of the match. It was great to see our freshmen Alessandra and Sophie compete so hard and find a way to win with composure and great problem-solving abilities. Taylor Cosme continues to show strong leadership at #1 position and today was no exception. She was one point away from getting another win, but her fight and intensity help the whole team compete at a higher level. Katie Ta really showed her toughness and grit with the match on the line at 3-3. Katie stayed calm under pressure, stuck with her game plan and closed out the match with a fearless tie-breaker. We continue to grow as a team and I look forward to our upcoming spring break trip to Furman and Davidson."
The Bears captured the doubles point with a 6-3 win by junior Juliana Simon (Los Angeles, Calif.) and freshman Alessandra Bianco (Chicago, Ill.) in the second spot followed by a 6-4 victory from junior Devon Jack (San Marino, Calif.) and freshman Sophia Reddy (Eden Prairie, Minn.) in third doubles.
Memphis evened the match, 1-1, by opening the singles round with a win in the second position. Brown regained its lead (2-1) when Reddy recorded a 6-0, 7-5 win in third singles. Bianco made it 3-1 after she rebounded from a first set lost and took her match, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.
The Tigers then won the next two matches to knot the match at three, with victories in the fifth and first spot, respectively. Ta was the difference and clinched the match for the Bears when she won her sixth singles match, 6-1, 7-6.
Brown closes out non-conference action and will next travel to the Carolinas to play at Furman on Sunday, March 24 (11:00 a.m.) and at Davidson on Tuesday, March 26 (3:00 p.m.).
