
Viruet Earns NCAA At-Large Berth, Gives Wrestling Four NCAA Qualifiers

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University wrestling senior 165-pounder Jon Viruet has earned an at-large berth into the 2019 NCAA Championships, giving the Bears four NCAA qualifiers for the first time since 2002, the NCAA announced on Tuesday afternoon.

Viruet (Springfield, Mass.) – who will make his second straight appearance at the NCAA Championships – joins senior 157-pounder Christian LaBrie (Exeter, R.I.), senior 184-pounder CJ LaFragola (Little Egg Harbor, N.J.), and senior 285-pounder Ian Butterbrodt (North Andover, Mass.) as NCAA qualifiers.

This winter, Viruet earned All-Ivy for the second time in his career, gaining First Team All-Ivy accolades for the first time. He has 31 wins on the year and leads the Bears in wins (31), dual wins (13), dual EIWA wins (11), falls (five), major decisions (eight), dual points (54), and dual pins (four). He came in sixth at 165 pounds at the 2019 EIWA Championships, placing at EIWAs for the third time.

The Bears' eighth-place team finish at EIWAs marked the program's highest finish at the conference tournament since 2004. Brown posted at least three NCAA qualifiers and six EIWA placers in back-to-back years for the first time since 2000.

The NCAA Championships will take place from Mar. 21-23 at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, Pa. The NCAA will announce the tournament's full bracket on Wednesday, Mar. 13 at 6:00 p.m.
