PRINCETON, N.J. – Brown University women's water polo completed a 2-0 day at the Princeton Invitational, defeating Villanova University, 12-4, and Iona College, 15-3, on Saturday at Princeton's DeNunzio Pool.
Competing in their first games away from home and starting a stretch of 24 games away from Providence, the Bears (6-2) used a 7-0 run against the Wildcats (0-3) and a 13-0 run against the Gaels (1-7) to extend their winning streak to five games.
"The effort from the beginning to the end in both games was probably the best that I've seen all season," Brown head coach Felix Mercado said. "They are tired right now – it's been a tough week of training. Especially defensively to stay focused and only give up a total of seven goals over eight quarters is impressive."
Junior Lexi Atwell (La Jolla, Calif.) and freshman Katie Klein (Lafayette, Calif.) each scored four goals on the day to lead 12 different goal scorers for the Bears between the two games.
At the defensive end, junior goalkeeper Lauren Burns (Long Grove, Ill.) and freshman goalie Marley Presiado (Newport Beach, Calif) each made eight saves against Villanova and Iona respectively.
Next, Brown competes at the Marist Invitational with match-ups against Iona (Feb. 23, 10:30 a.m.), St. Francis Brooklyn (Feb. 23, 3:00 p.m.), Mercyhurst (Feb. 24, 8:15 a.m.), and George Washington (Feb. 24, 2:15 p.m.).
