PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Freshman Isabel Riches scored a game-high three goals as Brown University women's water polo beat Siena College, 9-5, in the final game of the 2019 Bruno Classic on Sunday afternoon at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center.
Competing in the 19th and final game of the tournament, the Bears (4-2) jumped out to a 5-0 lead and held at least a four-goal edge over the Saints (0-4) the rest of the way, closing out their opening weekend.
"This was a good weekend for us, and the team is definitely heading in the right direction," Brown head coach Felix Mercado said. "It's great to start the year with a 4-2 record, and we had a lot of different contributors. The season is just beginning, and this gives us a great base to build on."
Riches (Laguna Beach, Calif.) paced the team with her hat trick while senior Carmen Rosas (Schaumburg, Ill.) netted two goals. Senior McKenna Miller (Danville, Calif.), sophomore Carissa Perez (Pico Rivera, Calif.), and freshmen Dagmara Czajka (San Diego, Calif.) and Katie Klein (Lafayette, Calif.) each scored one goal.
Perez added two assists, four steals, and two ejections drawn while freshman Lili Akin (Santa Barbara, Calif.) came up with two assists and two steals. Czajka, Klein, and Miller all drew two ejections apiece.
In the cage, junior goalkeeper Lauren Burns (Long Grove, Ill.) made nine saves, and freshman net-minder Marley Presiado (Newport Beach, Calif.) tallied six blocks and three steals.
The Bears opened the game with a 3-0 lead at the end of the first quarter as Rosas netted the contest's first two goals, and Czajka closed the period's scoring.
Riches staked Brown to a 5-0 advantage with 2:48 left in the half as she scored the first two goals of the second quarter. Siena found the back of the net at the 2:17 mark, but Brown remained ahead 5-1 at halftime.
The hosts extended their margin to 7-1 with 5:34 to go in the third quarter behind tallies from Klein and Riches. After a pair of goals from the Saints, a marker from Perez helped Brown maintain an 8-4 edge heading to the fourth quarter.
Miller netted a goal early in the final frame, and the Bears did not allow a goal in the stanza until 39 seconds remained.
Next, Brown plays at the Princeton Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 9 against Villanova (11:30 a.m.) and Iona (3:30 p.m.).
