
Women’s Basketball Drops 78-43 Decision at Dartmouth

HANOVER, N.H. – Junior guard Justine Gaziano scored a team-high 19 points, but Brown University women's basketball dropped a 78-43 decision at Dartmouth College on Saturday evening at Leede Arena.
The Bears (9-17, 1-9 Ivy) remained within 40-34 of the Big Green (12-11, 5-5 Ivy) with 6:22 to go in the third quarter before the hosts used a 22-0 run to gain separation from the visitors.
"We had two difficult games this weekend," Brown head coach Sarah Behn said. "We need to shift our focus to our last four games and to playing some better basketball."
Gaziano (Natick, Mass.) connected on 7-of-16 field goals and 3-of-8 3-pointers as part of her 19 points. She scored in double figures for the 22nd time this season and 66th time in her career. In the Brown record book, she now ranks ninth in career field goals (481) and sixth in single-season points (485).
Senior forward Erika Steeves (Montreal, Quebec) posted 10 points, six rebounds, and three blocks, while making 2-of-4 3-pointers. She scored in double figures for the 13th time this year and 58th time in her career. Steeves has now played in 110 career games, tying for second in program history, and moved into fourth place at Brown in career rebounds (788) this weekend.
Senior guard Shayna Mehta (San Francisco, Calif.) finished with five points, four rebounds, and two assists. She now has 1,715 career points, moving into 13th place in Ivy League history. Sophomore guard Dominique Leonidas (Stone Mountain, Ga.) added six rebounds, three assists, and three points.
For Dartmouth, Isalys Quinones led four Dartmouth double-figure scorers with 23 points alongside nine rebounds. Katie Douglas netted 20 points, Kealy Brown posted 14 points, eight boards, and five steals, and Paula Lenart chipped in 11 points.
In the third quarter, Dartmouth outscored Brown 28-9, making 11-of-14 field goals (78.6 percent) and 5-of-7 3-pointers (71.4 percent).
Gaziano connected on a trio of 3-pointers in the first quarter as the Bears held a 15-14 lead at the end of the opening stanza. Gaziano accounted for 11 of the Bears' 15 points in the quarter on 4-of-7 shooting and 3-of-5 triples.
A fast break layup from Gaziano and 3-pointer from Steeves pushed Brown ahead 20-18 at the 6:17 mark of the second quarter. Buckets from freshman forward Alana Kelley (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Gaziano helped Brown remain ahead, 25-23, with 3:16 left in the half before the Big Green used an 8-0 run to take a 31-25 edge at the intermission.
Neither team held a lead larger than two possessions in the first half.
A wing 3-pointer from Mehta brought Brown within 34-30 early in the third quarter and a layup from Gaziano kept the Bears within 40-34 with 6:22 to go in the frame. Dartmouth then closed the quarter on a 19-0 run to bring a 59-34 edge into the final stanza. The Big Green went ahead 62-34 early in the fourth, capping a 22-0 run.
In the fourth quarter, Steeves and freshman guard Maddie Mullin (Wellesley, Mass.) each made a 3-pointer.
Next, Brown remains on the road for contests at Columbia on Friday, Mar. 1 at 7:00 p.m. (ESPN+/SNY) and at Cornell on Saturday, Mar. 2 at 4:00 p.m. (ESPN+).
