PRINCETON, N.J. – The Brown women's swimming & diving team completed the third day of the Ivy League Championships on Friday night at Denunzio Pool and broke three school records, which included two individual events and one relay. The Bears remain in fourth place with 639.50 points while Harvard (988) and Yale (931.50) are first and second, respectively.
"This night was all about momentum," said head coach Kate Kovenock. "It actually started last night when our 50 freestylers lifted the team to end the session with a massive points swing and then tonight our IM crew kicked things off with some great racing."
To open the night's finals, freshman Emma Whall (Dover, N.H.) placed 14th in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10:10.40 while junior Julia Armitage (Cleveland Heights, Ohio) also finished in 10:13.94 for 17th.
Freshman Miku Takabayashi (Glastonbury, Conn.) won the B-Final of the 400 IM, touching in at 4:19.71 while freshman Audrey Lukawski (San Francisco, Calif.) was also in the final, placing fifth (4:22.32). In the C-Final of the event, junior Sarah Welch (Beverly, Mass.) grabbed second in 4:22.67 with Whall taking fourth (4:23.61).
Freshman Andrea Wei (Hopkinton, Mass.) came in third in the 100 butterfly A-Final with a time of 53.38, setting a Brown school record in the process. Freshman Caylene Rippon (Hershey, Pa.) and senior Emma Wittmer (Edina, Minn.) went 2-3 in the B-Final, with times of 54.61 and 54.77, respectively. Sophomore Han Nguyen (Los Gatos, Calif.) also added an eighth-place finish in the B-Final (55.26).
Senior Tatiana Prendella (Bernardsville, N.J.) competed in the A-Final of the 200 freestyle and claimed seventh in 1:49.41. The Bears then went 1-2 in the B-Final with junior Marley Cross (Seattle, Wash.) taking the top spot in 1:48.99 while junior Amelia Gilchrist (Greensboro, N.C.) followed in 1:49.11. Seniors Maddie Salesky (San Rafael, Calif.) (1:52.21) and Jackie Karpowicz (Wakefield, R.I.) (1:52.75) competed in the C-Final, placing seventh and eighth, respectively.
Rippon finished third in the C-Final of the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:04.55.
In the 100 backstroke, sophomore Taylor Seaman (Brighton, Mich.) took the top spot in the B-Final with a time of 54.39, breaking the second program record of the night. Welch (55.78) and freshman Allyson Ty (North Andover, Mass.) (55.99) also went 5-6.
To close the night, the 400 medley relay team of Seaman, Lukawski, Wei and Cross broke the third school record with a time of 3:39.21 for third place. The team took three seconds off of the previous mark of 3:42.21.
"It's special feeling to send a 400 medley relay up to the blocks knowing that the relay record itself is about to be broken without question," said Kovenock.
The Bears will wrap up the Ivy League Championship tomorrow (Feb. 23) with prelims starting at 11:00 a.m. and finals for the 1650 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly, 3-meter diving and the 400 freestyle relay starting at 6:04 p.m.
