New York, N.Y. - Sophomore Tamenang Choh (Lowell, MA) scored 22 points and senior Obi Okolie added 16 points to lead Brown to a 65-63 come-from-behind Ivy League win over Columbia Saturday evening at Levien Gym.
Brown improves to 15-9 overall, 3-5 in the Ivy League, while Columbia falls to 6-16 overall, 1-7 in Ivy play.
"I'm really proud of how we found a way to win when things weren't coming easy," said Brown head coach Mike Martin. "A lot of guys stepped up to make winning plays. We got the ball inside in the second half and that's what we talked about at halftime."
The game came down to free throws in the waning moments with the Bears hitting 9-of-10 free throws in the final two minutes, including 4-of-4 from both Choh and sophomore Desmond Cambridge (Nashville, TN). The Bears hit 22-of-27 free throws overall.
Trailing 59-58, Choh connected on two free throws with 1:27 remaining to give Brown the lead for good, 60-59, followed by two free throws by Cambridge with 32 seconds remaining for a 62-59 advantage.
Columbia's Jake Killingworth scored on a layup with 9.2 seconds left to cut Brown's lead to 62-61. Cambridge went to the free throw line once again with 8.8 seconds on the clock and converted both to put Brown back up by three points, 64-61.
Lions' guard Gabe Stefanini connected two free throws with six seconds left to trail, 64-63.
With 4.3 seconds on the clock, Brown's Brandon Anderson was fouled and senior Chris Sullivan went to the free throw line in his place due to injury, connecting on one of two free throws for a 65-63 margin. Steffani's three-point attempt at the buzzer missed the mark.
Choh connected on 5-of-8 field goals and 12-of-14 free throws in scoring 22 points. Okolie's 16 points put him in double figures for the 10thstraight game, while also grabbing five rebounds.
Cambridge added 12 points, hitting 8-of-9 free throws. Sophomore Matt DeWolf (Barrington, RI) and sophomore George Mawanda-Kalema led the Bears with six rebounds each.
Stefanini paced the Lions with 16 points and eight rebounds, while Peter Barba added 12 points.
The Bears got off to a sluggish start after making the long trip from Ithaca, NY the night before and fell behind 14-6 to open the game. Brown got back in the game when Okolie scored seven points in a 10-2 Brown run to trail 16-15.
Okolie gave Brown a brief 23-22 lead with 2:37 remaining in the half. Five straight points by the Lions put Columbia up 27-23, but Choh connected on a short jump shot with 47 seconds remaining to trail, 27-25, at the half.
Brown grabbed a 38-36 lead on a Choh layup with 12:46 remaining in the game and led by as many as four points, 44-40, on a Choh dunk at the 11:14 mark.
Columbia pulled ahead 55-52 on consecutive layups by Quinton Adlesh, the second with 3:52 remaining.
Brown returns home next week for a re-match with Harvard and Dartmouth, hosting the Crimson on Friday, February 22 at 7:00 pm, and Dartmouth on Saturday, February 23 at 6:00 pm. Both game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
