FLUSHING, N.Y. – The Brown women's tennis team defeated St. John's, 5-2, on Friday at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
"Today's match provided us with the opportunity to test the depth of our lineup," said head coach Lucie Schmidhauser. "We had to make some last-minute lineup changes due to one of our players becoming suddenly ill, and I was pleased to see how the team responded to the challenge. In doubles, a new doubles pair up of Ryan Peus and Courtney Kowalsky played with so much contagious enthusiasm, joy and exciting doubles play, giving our team a 1-0 lead after doubles. Peri Sheinin and Julia Newman took care of business at #6 and #5 singles with very focused performances. Taylor Cosme clinched the match at #2 singles with a fearless second set. Overall, the players continue to learn how to get out of their comfort zone, be willing to move past mistakes and find a way to win."
Sophomore Courtney Kowalsky (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) and freshman Ryan Peus (Palos Verdes, Calif.) won the doubles point for the Bears with a 6-2 win in second doubles. Freshman Alessandra Bianco (Chicago, Ill.) and senior Taylor Cosme (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) won third doubles by default.
In singles, senior Katie Ta (Mission Viejo, Calif.) (5-7, 3-2, retired, fourth), freshman Julia Newman (Natick, Mass.) (6-2, 6-2, fifth) and sophomore Peri Sheinin (East Greenwich, R.I.) (6-0, 6-1, sixth) recorded victories while Cosme gave the Bears the win with her 6-3, 6-2 performance in second singles.
The Bears will play at Rutgers tomorrow (Feb. 16) in a 4:00 p.m. match.
