PISCATAWAY, N.J.– The Brown women's tennis team was defeated by Rutgers, 5-2, on Saturday at the East Brunswick Racquet Club.
"It was a tough day for the team," said head coach Lucie Schmidhauser. "Rutgers came out really strong in doubles on their fast home courts and we were not ready to make the necessary adjustments. In singles, Taylor Cosme and Julia Newman stuck with their game plan throughout their matches and were able to come away with wins. Overall, we need to continue to work on being able to stress our opponents during crucial moments of the match and keep the pressure on them to close out sets and matches."
Rutgers took the doubles point with wins in third and second doubles, respectively.
The Scarlett Knights went up 2-0 with a victory in first singles before freshman Julia Newman (Natick, Mass.) put Brown on the board with a 6-4, 6-1 win in fifth singles. Rutgers then won the sixth and fourth singles matches before senior Taylor Cosme (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) recorded a 6-3, 6-4 win in second singles. The Scarlett Knights closed with a tight win in fifth singles, with freshman Ryan Peus (Palos Verdes, Calif.) narrowly falling, 7-5, 6-4.
The Bears will next host LIU Brooklyn on Friday, Feb. 22 in a 5:00 p.m. match.
